The nieghborhoods surrounding Fort Hunt Road are generally low-crime, high-income and well-maintained. Despite these commonalities, there are many differences between these neighborhoods depending upon the geology, location and builders in that neighborhood. This information is provided to give one an idea of the many choices offered along Fort Hunt Road, as well as give you an idea of what sort of activities are available here.

Neighborhoods

  • Belle Haven -- Belle Haven is one of the Northern Virginia's most prestigious neighborhoods because of it's proximity to services, high quality of construction and commanding position near Fort Willard.
  • New Alexandria -- Between the Belle Haven Country Club, Belle Haven Marina and Mount Vernon Rec Center, you'll find New Alexandria. This one little neighborhood includes garden apartments, cottages, houses, townhouses and luxury homes.
  • River Towers -- River Towers is a one of a kind place near the marina, the Metro and shopping, but surrounded by 26 acres of park lands.
  • Bucknell -- "Bucknell" includes both Bucknell Manor and Bucknell Hieghts, and is a neighborhood of Cape Cods, duplex townhouses situated on the uplands behind Fort Hunt Rd. Some of the most affordable homes along Fort Hunt Road are found in Bucknell.
  • Villamay -- Villamay, Westgrove and Marlan Forest are situated half-way down Fort Hunt Road along the Potomac. The homes here are general upscale, but lacking pretension.
  • Mason Hill -- Mason Hill was one of the last subdivisions to be developed along Fort Hunt Road and as such its homes are generally newer than most neighborhoods in the area.
  • Hollin Hills -- Hollin Hills is yesterday's vision of tomorrow. This is one of Northern Virginia's most remarkable neighborhoods because of its unique setting and architecture.
  • Hollindale -- Sometimes called Hollin Hall because if its proximity to the Hollin Hall Shopping Center. Hollindale is mostly traditional single family homes on rolling wooded lots.
  • Waynewood -- Americana at its best. Tree-lined streets, churches and schools frame a community where families are welcome.
  • Arcturus -- Estate homes, manors and luxury houses are most common along the Potomac in Collingwood and around Arcturus. There are a few more modest homes as well in Wellington and Collingwood.
  • Stratford -- The last stop on Fort Hunt Road neighbors Mount Vernon. Large river homes with excellent views are found here.
  • Area Shopping -- The area is well served by a wide range of shops and services.

The east bank of Little Hunting Creek is called Stratford Landing . Stratford on the Potomac is near the point where Little Hunting Creek enters the Potomac.

LIke Arcturus, this natural harbor was at one time a boaters' get-away: the perfect place for DC anglers to escape from the city.

There are few remnants of the fishing shacks here. One is more likely to find a multi-million dollar estate home.

Some homes on have piers and docks, many are have near waterfront exposure. Here's a list of what's available in Stratford Landing including both Stratford Landing and Stratford on the Potomac.

fortune teller

I took a walk on waterfront in Old Town Alexandria VA last night. The temperature was absolutely perfect as was the humidity. There were crowds, but it wasn't too much. I saw folks rushing to the Nina Dandy and other boats for an evening of cruising. There were several street musicians playing King St. At the pass-thru under the Torpedo Factory, a gentleman was playing the saxophone. And down along the water a street magician was showing his stuff. The balloon men were there creating animals and entertaining the children. A fortune teller was portending the future. A parrot rescue group had a flock of parrots and similar birds which were available for photos.

But then a light misting rain started to fall and the crowds scattered. At first they hid in the Food Court and on the trolley. The musicians were the first to pack, and they packed quickly to ensure their instruments weren't damaged. The mule drawn carriage pulled off and soon the streets were quiet. We walked around a bit, enjoying the peace and quiet. And then we were gone as well.

Summertime in Alexandria is loads of fun. Tourists descend on our fare city, but we're glad to have them as our guests.

boardwalk in Alexandria VA

One of the places that you have to visit when you're in town is also a favorite spot of residents: the Alexandria waterfront. The docks behind the Torpedo Factory Art Center are always bustling with activity. Every few paces you'll find a street musician, street magician and other entertainer. There are numerous restaurants here: most of them quite nice.

Admiral Tilp

If you're looking for a little fun on the water, you might want to take a cruse on the Admiral Tilp. The Admiral Tilp is docked here at the end of King Street and Union Street. The Admiral Tilp departs on the hour, so if you miss her, she'll be back. The Admiral Tilp offers a narrated tour under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, past National Harbor and down to Jones Point. The on-board guide provides a historical and contemporary context to what you will witness on board.

Torpedo Factory in summer

The Torpedo Factory condos are very close to the Torpedo Factory Art Center and as such are found in one of the most desirable locations in Northern VA. The Torpedo Factory is within walking distance of numerous restaurants, the waterfront, King Street and the King St. Trolley.

Torpedo Factory condos

The roof lines and architectural details of the Torpedo Factory are very appealing and as you can see the grounds are very well-kept. Following an Old Town tradition, the walkways in the Torpedo Factory condo community are not concrete, but rather are paved with bricks.

In the summer, annuals and crepe myrtles blossom around every corner. Ever wonder what's in those dormers at the Torpedo Factory?

Is there a better place to spend a summer afternoon than Old Town Alexandria?

biking the streets of Old Town Alexandria

King Street is lined with brick sidewalks that offer entrance to many shops and restaurants. At benches or around cafe tables, tourists and locals enjoy the atmosphere of Old Town. It's a place where folks find tasty treats to tempt the pickiest palate. A mix of people---patrons and peddlers, pedalers and pedestrians---pass as others pause to partake in a simple sidewalk sandwich. Flags---French and American, Irish and otherwise---give clue as to the fare found in these happy haunts.

Less than 2 blocks from where this picture was taken, one can find food that is French, Irish, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Southern, Cajun, American, Colonial and more. Shops with collectibles, fine apparel and shoes, furnishings and touristy knick-knacks are all here. The King Street Trolley is free and an easy way to wander from the Potomac to the Metro and back again. Parking garages are found nearby under Market Square and elsewhere.

Why just visit Old Town when declining prices and a buyer's market mean that you can finally afford to live here? Here's a little info on a few nearby communities.

waterfront parkAlexandria's history as a colonial seaport is well-known in the area, and is one of the reasons that this city to calls to visitors from around the country and around the world. Alexandria's seaport was once a bustling place of industry and commerce, but the cargo ships and packets from foreign seas are long gone now. Today, Alexandria's waterfront is geared more toward the pleasant than the practical.

Where the Water Meets the the Road

At the end of King St. where the road meets the water, there are brick walkways and wooden decks. Plenty of benches and gazebos are there and in the evenings this is a place to find street musicians and other performers practicing their craft before wandering walkers .

In the left side of this picture is the Torpedo Factory, an Alexandria landmark. The Torpedo Factory was what the name implies: an edifice dedicated to the construction of naval weapons of war. But as the industry's needs grew beyond the space here on the Alexandria waterfront, the building was repurposed as an art and crafts center. The building now houses a good many artists is is a wonderful place for tourists and residents alike to visit.

The Torpedo Factory

The Torpedo Factory and the waterfront are very close to the Torpedo Factory condos---high end condos in Old Town. For a list of prices and to check the availability of condos click the Torpedo Factory Condos. If you're interested in searching condos, townhouses and houses around Old Town you might find this post useful.

Metro Access

Among other things, the waterfront at Alexandria is nice because it's metro accessible. Simply take the Metro to King St. Station and then ride the free trolley to the Waterfront. The trolley is a service of the City of Alexandria for visitors and residents. It's a fun and easy way to make your way across Old Town.

Parks and paths line the waterfront these days. It's the perfect place for a walk on a Spring day.

Benches are found at just the right places. These photos were taking on a weekday morning, but in the afternoons and evenings the waterfront wakes up. Tourists, joggers and walkers share this open public space.

charthouse at Alexandria

The story of Alexandria, especially Old Town, is rich in seafaring traditions. Alexandria is not really a great seaport anymore but yet and still many seagoing vessels---including pleasure boats, cruise liners, transport ships, tour ships and ships of war---ply the waters of the Potomac River and some of these vessels dock at the Alexandria Waterfront. Additionally, when the weather warms it is not uncommon to find thousands of residents and visitors can be found along the waterfront.

Because Alexandria has citizens and mariners in harms way, the the City of Alexandria Fire Department has developed the Marine Operations Team. to assist in the protection of citizens and mariners who use the various waterways in and adjacent to the city either for business or recreation. The City of Alexandria Marine Operations Team consists of 24 members and a Team Leader (Battalion Chief) trained and training as Marine Firefighters, Swift Water Rescue Technicians, Lifeguards, Boat Operators and Crewmembers.

Shown below is the Fireboat 201 Vigilant---a Class 'C' fireboat equipped with a 1500 gpm PTO pump and a full compliment of equipment as required by NFPA 1925. The Vigilant is a swift vessel capable of speeds greater than 40 knots. When needed, paramedics are deployed aboard Vigilant to give the vessel an Advanced Life Support capability.

The city also deploys two Zodiac all-weather inflatables are used by the Marine Operations Team to gain rapid access to persons in distress in the marine environment. They can also be utilized to assist members of the Hazardous Materials in deploying booms. bus stop in winter

Winter in Northern Virginia can be a little bleak at times. The foliage is gone from the trees and the grass is a little beat.

Geese

But River Towers is teaming with life. A flock of Canadian geese winter here at the creek which surrounds River Towers.

Winter berries add some color to the scenery.

Ducks are here year-round, as they like the gentle waters of the canal.

It's not a great time for a picnic, but it's always pleasant to walk through the natural areas surrounding River Towers.
