Braddock is one of nine Magisterial Districts in Fairfax County, Virginia. Over the last century, housing, highways, and commercial developments overtook the fields and farmlands that once stood in their place. Today, they have been replaced with schools and higher educational complexes, shopping centers and malls, and a vast array of residential housing and condominium buildings. Residents of Braddock District have a rich history and it is reflected in their community.
During the summer months, the Braddock District presents the Braddock Nights Concert series. The series features free music and entertainment for families and friends, and includes special events for children. The Braddock District is known for its emphasis on preserving and celebrating their neighborhood and their neighbors through community events that support fellowship and provide artful entertainment.
Unlike the other Magisterial Districts, the Braddock District Office and government facilities welcomes a unique feature which offers its residents, educational groups and non-profit community the opportunity to use the Braddock Hall conference room for free. Braddock Hall can accommodate up to 40 people at tables and up to 80 people in a forum setting. In this way, Braddock truly is a self-governing community that values connecting with all those who live in greater Fairfax County.

This is wonderful neighborhood with easy access to parks, bike
trails and jogging paths. These homes have generous proportions and
ample lots.
Heading south, one will encounter Westgrove
first. Westgrove's homes, many built in the fifties and sixties, are
sturdy, brick homes with tasteful, colonial touches. Like much of New
Alexandria, Westgrove lies below the uplands, but still well outside
most of the River's floodplain.
Villamay homes are perched
on the bluff, and many have wonderful vistas to the River and beyond
the Potomac to Maryland. Villamay homes are often split level
characterized by enormous rooms with a thoroughly modern feel.
Marlan
Forest, as the name implies, is a bit more wooded than Villamay and
Westgrove. The lots are large and most have towering hardwoods. The
entire neighborhood is quiet, elegant and highly desirable. Check here
for a look at sales and prices in Villamay, Westgrove and Marlan Heights.

Crystal City is located in Arlington County Virginia between the Potomac River and the neighborhood of Aurora Highlands.

In many ways, Crystal City is a transportation hub. Crystal City well served by mass transit with easy access to the metro at the Crystal City Metro stop and many bus stops in the area. In addition to land transportation, Crystal City is served by Reagan National Airport. Jefferson Davis Highway / Rt. 1 is a main artery here, as is I-395.

In addition to Jefferson Davis Highway, one of the main thoroughfares in Crystal City is Crystal Drive. Crystal Drive runs parallel to Rt. from north to south through Crystal City. Many of Crystal City's most desirable homes are found on Crystal Drive including Crystal Gateway and Waterford House.
The Shops of Crystal City are accessible from Crystal Drive and from many other locations in Crystal City. |

Crystal Drive is generally uncongested and offers a wide choice of restaurants and shops.

One of the nicest things about Crystal City is the abundance of greenery in this urban setting. Crystal City manages to be convenient, metro accessible, full of high-rises, shops and restaurants, but home to many trees and parks.

Crystal City is connected by a network of tunnels and shops both below grade and indoors that make Crystal City a walker's paradise.

These passages network the shops of Crystal City to Crystal Drive and the Crystal City Metro Stop and more.

Pleasant sidewalks follow alongside the broad avenues of Crystal City.

From the skyline of Crystal City to the shops in the heart of Crystal City, this is a pleasant and convenient place to work and live.

Even the shops below-grade are well-lit and feel open and friendly. Crystal City is a well-planned community.

The Eisenhower Metro is central to many folks who make their home in and near the Carlyle District. The Eisenhower Metro is located inside the Beltway near Carlyle Towers and the Hoffman Center.

The pride of the Hoffman Center is the AMC Hoffman Theater. AMC Hoffman 22 is a 22-screen theater making it the largest movie complex in Northern Virginia and second largest in the region. Built in 2001, it is a relatively new theater. There ATM machines for purchasing tickets and advance ticket pickup. Ten of the screens are on the first floor with a very large lobby leading to a escalator or elevator to the second floor with 12 more screens. Two of theaters seat 410, and three others seat 318.

There are a number of restaurants and shops at the Hoffman Center. Among these are:

Delia's is a Mediterrean / Greek cafe that has been generally well-recieved by Eisenhower locals.

There is paid parking available in the garage next door and surface parking available for free. At night and on the weekends. when the offices of the Hoffman Center are closed, there is additional surface parking available for free.

I recently went on an excursion to Braddock Place and several condos near the Braddock Metro Station. The homes in this area are reasonably priced with excellent commutes to Alexandria, the Pentagon, Crystal City, DC and Arlington. Here's the view from a typical balcony as it looks back toward Old Town and the Potomac.

This condo had a nice kitchen with a pass through that allows light in from the balcony into the kitchen.

This unit is just a few paces from the Braddock Metro Station passing through the circle and then overpass to the station.

All units have balconies in this condo community.

Fireplaces are another nice touch here.

Kingstowne is a massive 22,000 acre subdivision---a planned community with nearly 5400 residences. The Northern Virginia region is home to many planned communities, Reston and Dale City come to mind quickly. Reston works well, but in my humble opinion, Kingstowne, the newest of the planned communities in this area, seemed to get things right. Kingstowne has a nice mixture of condos, townhouses and single family homes, with multiple entry points through broad rolling boulevards.
Kingstowne is so large, that many of the nearby subdivisions are now referred by many as being in Kingstowne. Yes, Kingstowne in many was has become its own little town. Never mind that nearby subdivisions like Island Creek and Manchester Lakes aren't officially in Kingstowne, many people still refer to the general area near Springfield and Franconia in Fairfax County, Virginia as Kingstowne.
One of the reasons that Kingstowne works so well is because of its position in the area's transportation network. For example, because Kingstowne is located just outside the Capital Beltway (I-495) and has easy access to the Springfield Mixing Bowl, the enormous junction of Interstates 95, 395, and 495, Kingstowne provides its residents a good commute to major employment centers like the Pentagon, Washington DC, Tysons Corner, Arlington and Alexandria. Via back-roads, Kingstowne connects very easily to Fort Belvoir.
The residents of Kingstowne can also reach downtown via the Metro's Blue Line at the Springfield-Franconia Metro or the Van Dorn Metro. Springfield-Franconia station is closer to Kingstowne and offers plenty of parking. Van Dorn Metro is closer to town and offers a "kiss and ride".
Despite being in a major metropolitan area, Kingstowne maintains a small town feel. Kingstowne Towne Centre has shops, grocers, restaurants, banks and fast food---in other words: all the conveniences of modern life. Nearby Springfield Mall serves most needs. Kingstowne is a great place to live.
Click Kingstowne to see what's for sale in and around Kingtowne.

The city of Alexandria in Virginia has a rich history that spans
over a century and is home to The Lyceum. The Lyceum was built in 1839
and was founded by a group of gentlemen who formed with the Alexandria
Library Company. Over the years the Lyceum has served many purposes.

Before the Civil War, the Lyceum was a cultural center in Alexandria
but this was ended when the war came to the city. During the Civil War,
the Lyceum was a hospital by the Union Army. It has been an office
building, a private home, and was the nation's first Bicentennial
Center. In 1985 The Lyceum became Alexandria's Historical Museum.
Now The Lyceum can be rented for many purposes such as concerts,
lectures, school programs, volunteer functions that the whole community
can participate in, and also weddings.
The outside of the building is in the Greek style form of
architecture which gives The Lyceum a distinct look. For tourists who
plan to visit The Lyceum there are many historical memorabilia items
which include the Civil War, documents, antique silver, photographs,
furniture, and 19th century stoneware. The Lyceum was
intended to be the cultural center of Alexandria and now it has
returned to its former prominence.
The Lyceum is a very charming place and anyone who would like to
visit will not be disappointed. The Lyceum is at the heart of Old Town
Alexandria and is a charming and wonderful place to live.

Luckett Field is a 5.6 acre baseball/softball field near the
intersection of Duke St. and Wheeler. Part of the grounds is dedicated
to the Luckett Field Skate Park.
The skate park is frequented by children and adults of all ages and
is considered a safe-family friendly park. The park is styled as a
street course with lots of different rails. There are several quarter
pipes, a 6-7 foot halfpipe. In addition to several different sized
banks, there is a pyramid, kicker ramp, grind box, manual pad, and
ledges. The park also has a big 3 stair set. There is no bowl.
There is no admission to the park. This park doesn't require pads, but I recommend them.
The skatepark is open seven days a week beginning at 9 am. The hours
are seasonal, so the park will close at 5 pm through March. Skaters
must be 6 years old to use the skatepark, and those under age 10 must
be accompanied by an adult.

The park lies in the shadow of the George Washington National
Masonic Memorial (aka the Alexandria Lighthouse, the Masonic Temple) in
Alexandria. The skyline of Carlyle is visible from the park. There are
many upscale (and a few downscale) neighborhoods very close by.

Driving Down River
From the CIA Headquarters, downriver to the hieghts of Rosslyn, there are several overlooks that provide nice views of Georgetown in Washington DC. Picnicers will find parks and pull-overs where they can take a break from their drive along the Potomac.
After passing under the beautiful Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Parkway passes one of my favorite (and one of the area's least known) Presidential memorials---Teddy Roosevelt Island. This forested island on the Potomac takes visitors into another world, and as you walk the trails on the island it is easy to forget that you are in an urban environment. If you've never done so, walk the trails and discover T. Roosevelt's statue and memorial---a fitting tribute to a man who love the outdoors and who helped establish the national park system.
If you're travelling south, or downriver, you won't have access to the island at this point and you'll have to save that bit of fun for your return. But just minutes past the Key Bridge, you'll clear the woods of Teddy Roosevelt Island and Rosslyn's bluff and will get your first glimpse of the national Capitol in all it's glory.
At the Monuments
From the road you'll have views of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial across the Potomac in Washington DC. On the hill above you in Virginia, you'll have a glimpse of the Iwo Jima Memorial. There is a mish-mash of poorly marked connecting roads entering and leaving the Parkway as you approach Memorial Bridge at and around the Iwo Jima Memorial.
These connectors can be confusing to tourists, but locals zip on and off the Parkway to access DC or Arlington. Despite the potential for accidents with slower moving site-seers and quick moving commuters, there are few incidents here: a testament to the fine design of the Parkway.
Memorial Bridge marks the entrance to Arlington National Cemetary, a solemn and beautiful place where Presidents, soldiers and honored citizens of the United States have taken their final rest. Fittingly, Memorial Bridge connects Arlington House, Robert E. Lee's home in Virginia, with the Lincoln Memorial, symbolizing the bridge that connects North and South in union.
National Airport
As one passes the Memorial Bridge the Jefferson Memorial with its famed Tidal Pools, becomes more visible. Past the Jefferson Memorial, the Parkway crosses Humpback Bridge onto Columbia Island, home to Lady Bird Johnson Memorial Grove. At this point, travellers downriver will have access to a pleasant picnic area which provides excellent views up to the Pentagon and the Air Force Memorial.
As the parkway leaves the island, it jogs away from the Pentagon and the hi-rise skyline of Crystal City toward Ronald Reagan National Airport. The airport's runaway nearly meets the road as the parkway gentle wends its way downriver. Here the parkway offers pleasant views of the Potomac and local air traffic landing at Reagan National. Just past the airport is the first of two marinas on the parkway.
Old Town Alexandria
After the marina, the Parkway slows to a traffic light and then for the next mile or so, makes its way through the streets of Old Town Alexandria. Old Town is a delight, with shops, boutiques and historical sites. Past Old Town the view opens up again with a sweeping view of the River toward National Harbor. The Belle Haven Country Club marks the approach to the Belle Haven Marina. This provides a great spot for a picnic as well as an opportunity to rent canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats.
Past the marina is the Dyke Marsh, a wetlands filled with birds, fish and wildlife. Across the river Fort Washington, a relic of the War of 1812 watches the narrows of the Potomac. Fort Washington, once a military stronghold, now a pleasant park, is a destination in itself and is worth an afternoon. The Virginia side of the river has Fort Hunt, where moldering remnants of World War II stand silent watch over a peaceful park.
Mansion at Mount Vernon
After several scenic vistas at and around Stratford Landing and Arcturus, the Parkway at last comes to an end at George Washington's mansion at Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country. Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America. The grounds are well-preserved as is the home itself. |

The George Washington Memorial Parkway, often called the GW Parkway by locals, meanders through parks on both sides of the road and is usually within close proximity to and sight of the Potomac River. The US Park Service maintains this and all parkways. Parkways are designed to be scenic meandering roads with light traffic. Despite finding a path through the most urban parts of Northern Virginia, the GW Parkway largely accomplishes these goals.
Top posted speed on the Parkway is 50 mph, and cruising speeds rarely exceed this limit. On the other hand, even during the worst of rush hour, speeds are rarely less than 45 mph. Those who are unfamiliar with traffic in the national Capitol region might not fully appreciate what an accomplishment this is.
To put these numbers in perspective, posted speeds on I-495 (the Beltway) are generally 55 mph. Traffic on the Beltway often exceeds 65 mph, but during rush hour, there are several points where the traffic slows to less than 25 mph. The Beltway is bumper to bumper madness squeezed between concrete sound-walls, while the GW Parkway is an easy cruise along the Potomac. Is it any wonder why I love the GW?
The GW Parkway winds along the banks of the Potomac River, starting near Great Falls in Mclean and then travels downriver all the way to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's Mansion. The parkway is an ideal drive for a tourist or visitor who would like to see some of the best views and sites the area has to offer.
A broad well-maintain bike and jogging trail runs the length of the GW Parkway, and is well used by residents and tourists alike.

The GW Parkway runs from Mt. Vernon to Mclean and Great Falls through the Alexandria and Arlington. At it's southern end it meets Old Mount Vernon Highway. Upriver, it is connected by the American Legion Bridge to a continuation in Maryland on the Clara Barton Parkway. The GW Parkway provides excellent views that are impressive to even a jaded commuter.
A commuter will find this is one of the best routes around the nation's Capitol. As a result of this, or because of this, some of the priciest and most exclusive neighborhoods in Northern Virginia are found along the GW Parkway. Here's a sampling what's currently on the market in some of these neighborhoods along the Parkway.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Belle View is connected to Alexandria and the DC Metro area not by a highway, or an interstate, although it is relatively close to the Beltway and the interstate. Instead Belle View commuters will likely use the GW Parkway. The blog entry hyperlinked in the previous sentence explains to area newcomers why the parkway is so special.
Belle View Shopping Center, at the heart of Belle View, has all of life's needs: a supermarket, gas station, banks, post office, Radio Shack, ABC store, fast food, restaurants and more. If that isn't enough, Belle View is just a mile or so from Rt. 1's suburban corridor, where one will find the usual fare of Lowes, Target, Chili's, TGIF's, Outback, Applebee's, fast food galore, Marshalls, Staples and more. Belle View is also a short bike ride or a long walk from Old Town Alexandria, a destination in itself.
Belle View is very close to the Belle Haven Marina. The marina has a boat launch and slips. Visitors may rent canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats here. There is also a water taxi from the marina to National Harbor and beyond. Along the river, bikers, roller-bladers and joggers enjoy the paths.

Proximity to the River is a huge benefit of life at Belle View but it also brings a small measure of uncertainty. Like every River, the Potomac will flood sooner or later. Two hurricanes have directly impacted the area since it was built in 1948. As a result, in 1969 and again in 2003 the Potomac flooded parts of New Alexandria. Homes closest to the river were most impacted, but many Belle View condos were spared any damage. The floodwaters receded as quickly as they came, and life returns to normal at Belle View. |

This home on Columbia is what I call a "Bucknell Classic". It has
all of the charm, coziness and comfort of a Bucknell home with
important updates that preserve the best of the architect's vision for Bucknell.
Many homes in Bucknell have additions and garages, but this home is exactly as it was meant to be!
This classic is ready for your updates, but you just might choose to
preserve this taste of simpler time when TV and morality were both
black-and-white.
Dormers and a nice lawn
This model has two symmetrical dormers and is preferred by many
because of the balance of the design. The carport is a later addition
that provides shelter for a vehicle without forgoing the windows at the
side of the house.

Living Room / Dining Area
Like many homes at Bucknell, this home has had one wall taken down
to create a spacious living room. The floors, all wood and all
original, gleam up cheerfully in the summer sun. There is a bedroom on
the first floor (not pictured) in the left rear quarter of the home.
Many residents use this bedroom as an office, but it also makes a fine
master bedroom with easy access to the first floor bathroom.

Bathroom
Take a peak in the bathroom and you'll find the kind of surprise that makes me love Bucknell.

The original pink and black tile on the floor and wall
is a nearly sixty year-old treasure that has survived in tact to give
the home its distinctive character and beauty. Together with a new
vanity and fixtures, the bathroom is functional while harkening back to
Wally and the Beaver.

Kitchen
When these houses were built the design philosophy was a little
different from today. The kitchen was viewed the way we think of a
laundry room. It is a workspace, that should be functional, and yet
hidden from view as much as possible. This update makes great use of
the small space while keeping with the architect's original idea of a
working kitchen that is detached from the living areas.

Upstairs
On the second floor there are two bedrooms and a full bath with a
shower, but to get there and back again you'll have to go up this
beautiful all wood stairway. The bathroom is not pictured, but it is
couched inside a rear dormer for light and headroom.

Inside the Dormers
In the bedrooms, the dormers add extra room and give the kind of
character and light that kids love. It's the perfect place to put a
desk or a work table. Don't you just love the built-ins!

And the tour finishes with a quick peek at the storage under the
eaves on the second floor. This one is nicely finished with carpeting
and drywall.

Like the Eisenhower Valley, the West End of Alexandria is a mix of units and types. Condos and high rises abound in "Condo Canyon" near Landmark and Lincolnia. But development from the 1950's and 1960's is also found tucked on side streets and around unexpected corners. The homes around and near Seminary Road are regarded by many as stately and highly desirable. Another interesting neighborhood in the West End is Cameron Station. Cameron Station is a newer development of townhouses and condos, but the stylings and architecture imitate the best of Old Town. Cameron Station is relatively close to both Landmark Mall and Old Town. The West End is well connected to Washington DC via I-395. The West End is the newest and largest part of the city. The West End has a diverse selection of restaurants and shops as well as Landmark Mall and several fine hotels. Fort Ward Park and Museum is found in the West End of Alexandria. |

As the name implies, Arlandria is at the border of Alexandria City and Arlington County. Arlandria is just north of Del Ray at terminus of Mount Vernon Avenue. Some residents also call this neighborhood Chirilagua. Arlandria has many small shops and restaurants. As Arlandria approaches Four Mile Run, Potomac Yards and Crystal City the area takes on chic and urban feel with new high-rise and other construction. |

Although its history doesn't stretch to the colonial days, Del Ray is another old neighborhood. Del Ray was founded in 1894 as a "streetcar suburb" to Washington, DC. Most of Del Ray was built from the 1890's to the 1950's and retains that small town charm despite being so close to the center of the universe. Quaint streets with brick or stone homes are found on streets that branch off from Del Ray's arteries. At the heart of Del Ray is the main street: Mount Vernon Avenue. This where you'll find a hometown mix mix of shops, restaurants and hardware stores. Braddock Road metro serves Del Ray and condos such as Colecroft Station are available here. |

Jefferson Manor is a townhouse community located across the street from the Huntington Club. This community lies between North Kings Highway at the Huntington Metro and Telegraph Road on its approach to I-495 the Beltway. The hallmark of the neighborhood is that it is relatively quiet despite being a few steps from the Metro and a block from the Beltway. Old Town Alexandria is right around the corner.

Jefferson Manor Park is at the heart of the community. The park is administrated by Fairfax County and has a large field, a picnic shelter and a few groves of trees.
Most of these duplex townhouses were built in the late 1940's, and the construction prices of that era define the neighborhood in many ways. The homes are sturdy, many with all brick exteriors, all with some brick exteriors. The construction is built-to-last with materials and construction practices no longer employed today. Most homes have small porches out front, many have decks in back. The lawns are large by the standards of modern townhouses, and most townhouses here have off-street driveways.

The typical townhouse here has two small bedrooms upstairs with a single full bath. The living room / dining room run the length of the house downstairs. The house has hardwood floors throughout, but the upstairs is often carpetted. Many units have refinished floors that are beautiful.
The kitchens, like many in the 1940's where built with a different philosophy than we see today. Today the kitchen is a part of the living space and is open and connected to the family room or living room. In the 1940's the idea was that a kitchen was like a laundry room. It was small as possible and hidden away where visitors couldn't see the mess.
Downstairs in the basement, most townhouses have a large room that is either a third bedroom or a family room. Many have a second bathroom downstairs and a laundry room at the rear of the home.

This floorplan is found throughout Jefferson Manor, but the years have been kind to these townhouses. Owing to the great location and the ample lawns, many people have built-out rather than move-out. That is to say, many of these townhouses have been expanded, updated and built-on. In some cases the addition rivals the size of the original structure.
A few of these townhouses have been completely tricked out with additions, decks, hot-tubes, large kitchens and so forth. A small number have had little or no care over the years. The brick wears well and newcomers often seek out the neglected homes in the hopes of building-out in a manner that most suits their needs.
The neighborhood remains relevant and sought after because it is so close to the Huntington Metro and because the homes are well-built. Although they were originally nearly identical, there is a wide selection in the neighborhood now. From dilapidated to updated, from tiny to trick-out, from standard to super, there are a lot of choices here on the hill.
For more pictures and prices check here for a look at all properties under $500k in 22303 zip code. Because there is a such a wide range of choices, Jefferson Manor townhouses can sell for anywhere from just under $300k to over $450k. Please contact me with questions or to tour any properties of interest. |

Parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially in touristy areas along
King St. Therefore, a great way to explore the area is to take the
Metro to King St. and then hop a ride on the King St. Trolley. The
trolley runs its route from 10 am to 10 pm every day. A printable map is available for those who know nothing about the area.
There is no charge to ride the trolley and it makes stops about
every two blocks between the King St. Metro and the Potomac. The length
of this circuit can be walked in about 20 minutes, so many choose to
take the trolley to the Potomac and then walk back to the Metro through
Old Town.
The Trolley makes it final stop before returning to the Metro near the Torpedo Factory.
Just as the name implies, the Torpedo Factory was torpedo factory in
the early part of the last century. Today it is a world-renowned art
center with three floors of open studios and galleries. Here, one can
observe artists and purchase original artwork. The Torpedo Factory is
on the waterfront where street musicians and entertainers play nearly
every night.
The Trolley was designed to compliment service by the National Harbor's new Water Taxi.
The National Harbor is located across the Potomac in Maryland and is
the site of a brand new convention center. The convention center and
many restaurants are already open in this brand new area landmark.
Additionally boat service is available up and down river from the
Strand in Old Town. |

This is part of series of articles comparing the benefits of condos in close proximity to the Huntington Metro
If you need a balcony or patio in your condo, you've come to the
right place. All four of these complexes have balconies or patios in
most units. The Huntington Club, the Hunting Creek Club and Montebello
all have balconies, patios or verandas in every single unit. Now
obviously the new units have slightly more appealing balconies, but to
sort them from top to bottom, this comparison focuses on the views.
If a good view is something you absolutely must have from your condo
and balcony, you're best chance of finding that view is at Hunting
Creek Club. Nearly every unit in the building offers a panorama over
the city or toward the Potomac. Some of these units have absolutely
breathtaking views. You must see them to appreciate them as 400 pixels
of cyberspace can't approximate what you'll see.
You'll find good views at all the others. Many decks at Huntington
Club look toward the US Patent & Trademark Office, the Carlyle
skyline and the Masonic Temple at Shooter's Hill. Montebello has many
pleasant views into and above the treetops. At the Midtowns you'll
find a nice view here and there. So, it is possible to find good views
at any of the others. But at Hunting Creek Club you will consistently
find sweeping and pleasant views.

The Braddock Metro Station
is located at 700 N. West St., entrance at the North side Braddock Rd.
Residents of the Braddock Road Metro neighborhood are participating in
a comprehensive re-planning of the blocks between the Metro Station and
Route 1. There are already several condo communities at Braddock Metro,
including Colecroft Station Condos and the Lofts at Braddock. Toward Rosemont and Del Ray, the neighborhood is mostly composed of upscale single-family detached homes.
Braddock Metro Station has relatively low Metro ridership. Near the
metro there are acres of empty lots and warehouses in what was once an
industrial area, but is now a highly sought after neighborhood. So,
this neighborhood is poised for redevelopment. Residents, activists and
developers are working with local government to plan
architecture, public spaces and parks, safe and pedestrian friendly
streets, local retail and restaurants, transit, and a mix of housing
types for all incomes.
The first train departs at 4:55am at Huntington Station, and last
train departs at 12:33am Huntington Station. Braddock Metro is 7 blocks
from the center of Old Town Alexandria, of Washington Street, and 5
blocks to the Potomac River.
Parking available using SmarTrip cards with 10 short metered spaces. There are 46 bike racks and 12 lockers at the station.
Metrorail fares: $1.65 minimum $4.50 maximum Children's fares: Up to 2 children 4 years or younger ride free with an adult paying full fare. Children 5 or older pay adult fares. Seniors 65+ ride for half price of the regular fares.

With
a mixture of residents and businesses, Bailey's Crossroads is a
thriving, prosperous community. Bailey's Crossroads is located in the Mason District of Fairfax County, Virginia.
Bailey's Crossroads is located on what is now called Leesburg Pike.
In pre-Columbian America Leesburg Pike was a buffalo trail and an
Indian trail. The trail lead from the Potomac River to the foot of the
Blue Ridge Mountains. In the colonial era, the land here was part of
the original Fairfax land grant. That land was parceled out over time,
and as a result George Washington owned land which now is occupied by
the Skyline complex of condominiums. In 1809, Bailey's truly became a crossroads with the construction of the Washington Graveled Turnpike which is now know as Columbia Pike.
The name Bailey derives itself from New York entrepreneur Hachaliah Bailey, of Barnum & Bailey
fame, who purchased land at the crossroads in the mid 19th century. He
used the land as a place to house and display America's first elephant.
During the Civil War, Bailey's Crossroads changed hands several
times and as a result nearby homes were used to garrison Confederate
and Federal troops. Union President Abraham Lincoln ordered a large
military review here after the Union defeat at the Battle of Bull Run.
In 1913, the Alexandria Water Company built a reservoir named Lake Barcroft near here. (Barcroft Park
is nearby in Arlington County.) By the second world war, the area had
transformed into a bedroom community for Washington DC. By the 1950's
the Seven Corners Shopping Center
was considered a model of the American future by many. As a result, in
1953 US President Dwight D. Eisenhower brought Soviet Premier Nikita
Khrushchev to the Seven Corners at Bailey's Crossroads. A few years
later, the shopping center was enclosed and became Northern Virginia's
first shopping mall.
The Skyline complex appeared in the early 1970s and is now home to Skyline Square, Skyline Plaza, Skyline House and more condominiums.
Schools located in or near Bailey's Crossroads include
- Bailey's, Beech Tree Elementary School,
- Belvedere Elementary School,
- Glen Forest Elementary School,
- Graham Road Elementary School,
- Parklawn Elementary School,
- Sleepy Hollow Elementary School,
- Timber Lane Elementary School,
- Westlawn Elementary School,
- Gasgow Middle School,
- and JEB Stuart High School.
Bailey's Crossroads Revitalization Corporation is a group of
individuals who want to help achieve a better community by involving
themselves in activities such as traffic enhancements, streetscape, and
residential landscaping. For more information about condos or real
estate near Baileys Crossroads, please contact Will Nesbitt of Condo 1 Alexandria.

This is part of series of articles comparing the benefits of condos in close proximity to the Huntington Metro
In each of these articles I'm doing a head-to-head comparison of
these complexes and then selecting a winner from each category. I'm
making these selections based upon my personal opinion, and you might
not agree with my opinion, but I've put it out there as a starting
point for a home buyer's discussion.

If you want the most space in your condo, for the least amount of
cash, then Huntington Club the pick from this category. Most Huntington
Club one bedroom units sell for well-under $200k; many are currently
less than $175k. Many Huntington Club two bedroom units sell for less
than $250k, most for less than $200k. You can even find a three bedroom
at Huntington Club for well under $300k. The rooms in these units are
large and open. There is ample closet space. When one compares the
price of the unit to the amount of living space you get, Huntington
Club is the value buy at the Huntington Metro.
Hunting Creek Club is nicely proportioned. The rooms do not feel
abbreviated. Even the studios at the Hunting Creek Club are larger than
1 bedrooms at some of the area's newest complexes.
Montebello also "feels" big compared to many newer condos. This is
in part due to the floor plans, but the smaller 1 bedrooms at
Montebello measure in at 850 sq ft.
As one might expect, the Midtowns of Alexandria---the newest condos
in this lot---offer the least amount of space for the most amount of
money. |

Skyline Plaza, a two tower 26-story condominium residence
located in Falls Church is on a premium location seven miles away from
the Reagan Airport and five miles from the Pentagon. The towers are
surrounded by 10 beautiful acres of highly maintained landscaped
ground. Skyline Plaza has easy access to I-395
which grants easy access to DC and destinations around the Beltway such
as Tysons Corner. If you are new to the idea of a condominium and
you're curious about the benefits and drawbacks of condo life may find CondoBenefits.com useful.
The towers of Skyline Plaza were developed in the 1970s near historic Bailey's Crossroads.
Skyline Plaza is just minutes away from many strip malls (such as the
Skyline Shopping Mall and Bailey's Crossroads Shopping Center) malls
(such as Landmark and Pentagon City), and urban shopping spots (like Old Town Arlington and Wilson Blvd. in Arlington).
The neighborhood is filled with all of life's conveniences
highlighted by a plethora of affordable ethnic cuisines and
neighborhood restaurants. Walk Score
rates this as a highly walkable neighborhood. I dispute this slightly
because the Skyline neighborhood is heavily trafficked and serviced by
6 lane roads in some cases. Everything is close to Skyline, true. But
not everything is walkable from Skyline. On the other hand, Skyline
Plaza is has very active and clean bus service with quick shuttles to
nearby metro stations.
Public schools near Skyline Plaza include Edison High, Thomas
Jefferson High, Stuart High, Twain Middle, Holmes Middle, Glasgow
Middle, Bailey's Elementary, and Glen Forest Elementary.
On site, Skyline Plaza offers a variety of recreational activities.
If you like playing pool there is a billiard room located on the
Penthouse level of the North building. The billiard room contains two
regulation size tables with cue racks. (No one under 12 is permitted in
this area and ages 12 to 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) The
billiard room is accessible everyday from 10 am to 10 pm.
If
you have the need to entertain large number of guests, Skyline Plaza
has you covered. Each tower has a party room with a fully functional
kitchen in the penthouse. There is ample room for dancing and dining
and the penthouse has its own furniture. The views from the penthouses
are spectacular. The rooms must be reserved by the residents and there
is a nominal fee associated with use of the party room.
A card room is also located on the penthouse level in both towers.
The card room holds less people then the party room but fully furnished
as well. The card room is also only available by reservation. The hours
of availability for the card room and party room are 10 am to Midnight
from Sunday through Thursday. The party room and card room are open
until 1 am on Friday & Saturday.
Another
feature of the Skyline Plaza is the media library, housing over 2,500
titles. The media room is located on the B1 floor of the North Tower.
Also in the basement of both towers, there are well-maintained fitness
rooms. Both fitness rooms include a locker room, jogging machine,
weight machines, free weights, saunas, showers, steam rooms, and
bathrooms. All who wish to use the fitness rooms must be at least 18
years old. The fitness rooms are available are from 6 am to 11 pm
daily. Be advised that the cleaners are in the fitness room from 2 pm
to 3 pm.
The pool at Skyline Plaza can be used by old or young, children
under the ages of 12 must have an adult accompany them at all times
(children's pool also included). The rooftop terrace is one of the most
wonderful aspects of Skyline Plaza giving you a panoramic views of Old
Town Alexandria. The terrace is accessed from the Penthouse level and
from the party room.
The typical unit at Skyline Plaza has of 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms,
with washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator. The unit itself is
approximately 1200 square feet. Of course, check with me to find out what is currently available.
Skyline Plaza published the SKYlines newsletter every month updating residents on up coming events in the community.
Skyline Plaza provides quality, comfortable living at very
affordable prices. Whether your single, retired, or married, Skyline
Plaza has options that can fit your living needs.

This
is wonderful neighborhood with easy access to parks, bike trails and
jogging paths. These homes have generous proportions and ample lots.
Heading south, one will encounter Westgrove first. Westgroves homes,
many built in the fifties and sixties, are sturdy, brick homes with
tasteful, colonial touches. Like much of New Alexandria, Westgrove lies
below the uplands, but still well outside most of the River's
floodplain.
Villamay homes are perched on the bluff, and many have wonderful
vistas to the River and beyond the Potomac to Maryland. Villamay homes
are often split level characterized by enormous rooms with a thoroughly
modern feel.
Marlan Forest, as the name implies, is a bit more wooded than
Villamay and Westgrove. The lots are large and most have towering
hardwoods. The entire neighborhood is quiet, elegant and highly
desirable.
The Many Neighborhoods of Fort Hunt Road
The neighborhoods surrounding Fort Hunt Road
are generally low-crime, high-income and well-maintained. Despite these
commonalities, there are many differences between these neighborhoods
depending upon the geology, location and builders in that neighborhood.
This information is provided to give one an idea of the many choices
offered along Fort Hunt Road, as well as give you an idea of what sort
of activities are available here.
Neighborhoods
- Belle Haven
--- Belle Haven is one of the Northern Virginia's most prestigious
neighborhoods because of it's proximity to services, high quality of
construction and commanding position near Fort Willard.
- New Alexandria --- Between the Belle Haven Country Club, Belle Haven Marina and Mount Vernon Rec Center,
you'll find New Alexandria. This one little neighborhood includes
garden apartments, cottages, houses, townhouses and luxury homes.
- River Towers --- River Towers is a one of a kind place near the marina, the Metro and shopping, but surrounded by 26 acres of park lands.
- Bucknell ---
"Bucknell" includes both Bucknell Manor and Bucknell Hieghts, and is a
neighborhood of Cape Cods, duplex townhouses situated on the uplands
behind Fort Hunt Rd. Some of the most affordable homes along Fort Hunt
Road are found in Bucknell.
- Villamay
--- Villamay, Westgrove and Marlan Forest are situated half-way down Fort
Hunt Road along the Potomac. The homes here are general upscale, but
lacking pretension.
- Mason Hill ---
Mason Hill was one of the last subdivisions to be developed along Fort
Hunt Road and as such its homes are generally newer than most
neighborhoods in the area.
- Hollin Hills
--- Hollin Hills is yesterday's vision of tomorrow. This is one of
Northern Virginia's most remarkable neighborhoods because of its unique
setting and architecture.
- Hollindale ---
Sometimes called Hollin Hall because if its proximity to the Hollin
Hall Shopping Center. Hollindale is mostly traditional single family
homes on rolling wooded lots.
- Waynewood --- Americana at its best. Tree-lined streets, churches and schools frame a community where families are welcome.
- Arcturus ---
Estate homes, manors and luxury houses are most common along the
Potomac in Collingwood and around Arcturus. There are a few more modest
homes as well in Wellington and Collingwood.
- Stratford --- The last stop on Fort Hunt Road neighbors Mount Vernon. Large river homes with excellent views are found here.
- Area Shopping --- The area is well served by a wide range of shops and services.

arts and attraction. Easily accessible, the development is a few short

The Historic District of Old Town Alexandria provides a picturesque
setting for this one-of-a-kind suburb, where the best of 200 plus years
of history is beautifully married with 21st century planning and
conveniences. The small town atmosphere that envelopes the Duke helps
to detach it from the greater Metropolis of its world-famous neighbor.

Residences
The Duke's prestigious residences were built by Marquis Homes, one
of the Mid-east's premier community designers. Whether considering the
Grand Townhomes or the spacious Flats, Marquis ensured that the
architectural old world flair merges with the comfort of modern
amenities in an unforgettable elegance.
Grand Townhomes
Limited to a mere 18 townhomes, these precious residential

- The Silas
Each of the first three glorious floor plans showcase a massive
three-sided fireplace joining the living and dining areas, two second
floor bedrooms with their own baths, and a masterful master suite
reminiscent of royalty, complete with an overlooking balcony.
The final floor plan, the Silas, anchors the offerings of the first
three, while boasting what is described as a neo-traditional design
quality meant to creating visual interest and serve as more of an
exhibition for owner's tastes.
Flats
Larger than their contemporary condominium counterparts, these
dramatic single-level condo homes display a grand elegance that is sure
to make the homeowner proud. After winding through regal hallways to
private entrances, guests are welcomed into intimate foyers that open
into one of six different designs.

Fort Hunt Park consists of 105 acres located along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, approximately 6 miles south of Old Town Alexandria. The Park is a part of the over 7,000 acres that make up the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The
lands of Fort Hunt Park were originally a part of George Washington's
personal farm and were became a military outpost and now serves as a
picnic area and nature park.
So that all may better understand the history of Fort Hunt, the Park
Service has begun research to uncover the names of the many veterans
who served at Fort Hunt when it was a military outpost.
Fort Hunt Park was converted into a fortification during the Spanish
- American War. In 1897 the fort was modernized for military
operations. During War World II the fort was used as a top secret
military intelligence outpost.
After both World War I and World War II, Fort Hunt was virtually
abandoned due to military cutbacks. The National Park Service now
adminstrates Fort Hunt Park a recreational park for public use. Fort
Hunt has been a focal point of personal dramas of all kind throughout
its history, but now it's dedicated to public recreation.
Hours are 7am until sunset year round for general use. From April -
October reservations are needed to use some areas of the park. For
information about homes and neighborhoods near and around Fort Hunt
Road check out Fort Hunt Info. |
