In case the weather is bad, all these features are connected by underground passageways.

When Forbes Magazine named Fairfax City #3 of the top 25 U.S. cities to live in, it must have had the Chocolate Festival in mind.
Every year at this time the town invites the rest of us to binge on chocolate and charming 19th century surroundings. This year's festival will be held on February 6 and 7 in Old Town Fairfax at Main Street and University Drive.
Events will include a contest to create chocolate works of art, a Pancake breakfast (chocolate chip, of course), open house in some the district's historic buildings and a craft show. Walk off some of those excess calories by exploring well preserved buildings dating from the early 1800's, including the site of the first Confederate casualty of the Civil War and the Fairfax City Courthouse--built in 1800 and still in use today. The district also includes a wide variety of restaurants and boutiques. |

Athletes, would-be athletes and nature lovers should head south from Old Town Alexandria.
Stretching along the Potomac River from the southern border of Old Town to Mount Vernon Estate is the Mt. Vernon bike path. Eight miles of asphalt allow locals and visitors to walk, run or bike while enjoying river views and wildlife sightings. Bald eagles, ospreys, blue heron, cormorants, egrets, ducks and geese are among waterfowl commonly spotted along this corridor, while deer, groundhogs and fox sightings are frequent. Combine cardio and conservation by following a nature trail through Dyke Marsh.
Along the bike path is a fitness course and several points of access for canoes or kayaks.
Businesses in the nearby Belle View shopping center allow you to rent a bike, tone up at Curves or take karate lessons. Adjacent to Belle View is the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, which provides Fairfax County residents with an indoor pool and ice rink. Farther south on Route 1 is a Gold's Gym.
Local communities such as River Towers, Porto Vecchio and Belle View also offer their residents tennis, swimming and basketball facilities as well as their own in-house gyms.

The Alexandria Fun with Friends group is getting together for some light gaming fun at the Club Room again. Friends and newcomers alike are welcome. Attendees are invited to please bring your favorite games and be ready to teach or just bring an open mind and be ready to learn. The group will mainly be playing what they call "Eurogames". Although these
games come from all over now, the first of this genre started in
Europe, thus the name. Typically Eurogames are easy to learn, fast to
play and the game is about collecting points of some kind rather than
eliminating your opponent. This is different from classic American
games like Risk or Monopoly where the game can last for hours and the
goal of the game is to conquer or crush your opponent. Of course, card games, Scrabble and other old favorites are always welcome.
Our
food theme this time around: healthy snacks! There is no charge for the
event, but attendees are asked to bring fruit or a veggie tray or
something creative (but healthy). Please bring a drink to share. This
is as much about the socializing as it is about the gaming. The organize says, "If you've
never been to one of our gaming get-togethers the mood is casual and
relaxed. We welcome new folks and we're happy to see old friends. We
hope to see you there!" BTW, the Greater Washington DC RPG group
is meeting at the same venue at 2 pm and will be wrapping up just as the Alexandria Fun with Friends group starts up. Some of them might linger through our meet-up. Those of you
who wish to may come early for their meetup.

I was born in Northern Virginia, and have lived here most of my life, but there are no end of things to do. When Christmas approaches in Northern Virginia, the Holiday Season is a great time to get out and see some of what the area has to offer. Julie and I have already started to enjoy some of the many sites of the season and I thought I'd share a bit with friends and soon to be friends who are considering moving to this area.

Just across the Potomac River from Alexandria VA is the National Convention Center at National Harbor. This recently developed area is home to many high-end shops and restaurants, and makes a nice day-trip anytime. Julie and I visited ICE! a holiday display of ice sculptures. The attraction was billed as "a world unlike any other ... a winter wonderland made entirely of ice. We explored ten different holiday scenes made from two million pounds of ice, including a life-sized Santa's Workshop, a penguin village... and even ice slides that stood more than two stories tall! ICE! was created by a team of 40 artisans and sculptors.

The tunnel had white branches that were covered in ice. Inside the exhibit the air was a chilly 9 degrees Fahrenheit. All visitors wore special blue parkas over their coats that kept us nice and warm.

My son Stuart and I goofed around at the penguins near the glass-like ice igloo. National Harbor can be seen from Alexandria, but a few nights ago we took a short drive around the Beltway to the Washington, DC Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, also known as the Mormon Temple.

The ground of the Mormon Temple are open to all visitors during the Christmas season. This impressive church and its surrounding grounds shine brightly with nearly a half-million sparkling Christmas lights. Each night, a different local musical group performs a live concert in a state-of-the-art theater. Best of all: all events are free!

It's hard for my little picture to really catch the brilliance of the winter night, but in both of these pictures you can see a representative of the Star of David shining in the distance over a Nativity Sceen near the visitors' center.

We grabbed some photos outside and walked the grounds. They were plenty of people there, but the crowds were very polite and nice. The Mormon ushers and parking attendants were very welcoming to all who approached.

It was a chilly night, so we came in the visitor's center to warm up. There were Christmas Trees from around the area and I took Julie's picture near the Mount Vernon tree. I really liked the trees with contributions from nations around the world. Those trees were themed by continents so there was a tree themed with decorations from Africa, from South American, from Europe and from Asia.

Another great spot to check out is the National Christmas Tree near the lawn of the Whitehouse near the Ellipse in Washington DC.

We parked in front of the Washington Monument and then headed across the lawn toward the National Christmas Tree and National Menorah. On the way we passed an enormous Yule Log burning brightly to warm visitors. There is a parade of free entertainment and there are trees representing all the states and territories of the USA.

The National Christmas Tree is between the Washington Monument and the Whitehouse, but very close to the Whitehouse.

The Pie Social was a big hit with members of the Alexandria Fun with Friends group. Members pitched in to bring pies and a supporting cast of whipped cream, milk, coffee and teas. The group relaxed with a few games and chatted the evening away. I tried to taste them all but there were just too many and they were just too good. I definitely look forward to the next time around with this one.

The event was held at the River Towers Club Room, just outside Old Town near the Potomac in New Alexandria. About twenty locals, friends and new acquaintances, gathered to enjoy a little pie and some fellowship.

This from the Alexandria Fun with Friend's Calendar: How about an evening of games and socializing with a few of your favorite nibbles? Newcomers
and old friends are welcome here for an evening of light-gaming and
socializing. We're asking everyone to pitch in and bring something from
our list. (Declare on your RSVP what you're bringing!) Here's what
we'll need:
- Cheeses --- Cubed or sliced but nicely plated. We're going upscale this time!
- Fruits or Veggies --- Perfect for nibbling and healthy as can be.
- Meats or Cold-cuts --- Cube a salami or just bring a meat plate. Most of us are skipping dinner so make it nice!
- Crackers
and snackers --- No bags of Lays and Doritos people! We're channeling
our inner snobs on this one. It's culture for the uncultured and make
it count with water crackers, gourmet crackers, or quirky crackers.
- Olives
-- We're not talking about a can of olives not fit for a pizza. We want
Greek and Spanish olives, pitted or unpitted as you wish. Dripping with
oil and oh so tasty!
- Two tablecloths --- Okay, so you're
not a foodie. You can't cut a cheese cube to save your life. Well guess
what? You can pitch-in by classing up the joint with a paper tablecloth
from your local grocery or party store! Yes, you're getting off easy,
but make it up when you're here by taking out a trash bag and helping
with clean-up.
- Get creative! --- Are you a cook? How
about impressing us with a hot wing, or fried dumpling, or a savory
pastry? Make it look nice but more importantly don't use us to
experiment with your new recipe!
- Homemade
dessert? --- It might be nice to finish off with some cupcakes or
brownies. Don't bring us the "Oops we made too much" special from
Safeway!
I know this list looks a little demanding,
but we're trying to give you an idea of what we're shooting for. Bring
your own drinks, and if your drinks are alcoholic, please drink in
moderation. Keep in mind the RSVP's so you know how many people will be
coming. Please update your RSVP if you can't make it. We're counting on
you to make it nice. Please bring a game and be ready to teach some others. We'll have fun and look forward to seeing you there!
The event is November 21st and all are welcome. Details and RSVP at Alexandria Fun with Friends.

If you enjoy boardgames and meeting new people you should check out this event hosted by the Alexandria Fun with Friends Group. This group enjoys playing "Eurogames". Eurogames
are games that emphasize strategy, downplay luck, lean towards economic
(trading and building) rather than military themes, and have attractive
physical components.
Newcomers are welcomed because these games often have few rules and are easy to learn. The organizer warns that some of these games are long and complex but they don't often play those games. They are called "Eurogames" because this fad of games originated in Europe with games like Settlers of Catan. Most of these games were invented in the last 25 years, but if you
liked Life, Clue, Risk and Monopoly as a child, you will probably like
Eurogames as an adult.
This event is at a private residence in West Springfield on Oct.
17 from noon to 11 p.m. You may bring food to share or bring money for
ordering pizza. or Chinese. We will have some snacks and drinks
available. RSVP and directions are found at the Alexandria Fun with Friends Group. |

This is a chance for all of our bakers to strut their stuff! That's right: Alexandria Fun with Friends is hosting a good ole fashion pie social on Octuber 16th 2009.
Each
attendee should bring a homemade dessert (preferably a pie). We'll look
at the pies. Smell the pies. Talk about the pies and then the highlight
of the evening: WE'LL EAT THE PIES! We'll
bring a few boardgames and we encourage you to do the same, or at the
least be prepared to play. Some of our members play musical instruments
and we encourage them to bring their best. There is NO CHARGE
for this event if you bring a homemade dessert! If you bring a
store-bought dessert there is an attendance fee of $5 and if you don't
bring anything there is an attendance fee of $15. If you absolutely

If you like street music, then you'll find no better spot to wander than Old Town Alexandria. Through-out the week, especially on weekends, musicians gather in Old Town at street corners and near the waterfront to play music for tips and applause. Most are highly talented professionals, some are learning to play their instrument in front of a crowd. I enjoy them both in different ways. Here in Old Town Alexandria, you'll find everything from a lonely saxophone, to steel drums to an entire band. Below I've collected a few photos to give you a taste of Old Town's many musicians.

This foursome was phenomenal singing and playing old time mountain music. It was a great throwback to the Carters because the gal in the front on the guitar was a great singer. The banjo player and bass were on point and I love the texture that the mandolin (seated behind guitar) provided.

The glass harp as played by Jamie Turner is an old town treat one simply must hear in person to appreciate.

This glass not only strummed the harp to perfection but she also sang beautifully.

At the waterfront behind the Torpedo Factory there are often a few soloists serving up music for passers-by.

I heard some fine picking and strumming from this pair.

Grape and Bean is just another example of an Old Town artisan boutique. Shops like Grape and Bean, or as they call themselves Grape + Bean, are community assets and part of what makes Old Town so special. Long-time Alexandria residents David Gwathmey and Sheera Rosenfeld opened Grape & Bean in 2008. Together they have managed to create a place that is comfortable, warm, welcoming, while offering excellent service and high quality products.
Grape and Bean is a retail wine shop, coffee shop and a wine tasting bar. Along with wine by the glass and coffee by the cup, Grape and Bean offers a food menu with cheese plates and other items that are tailored for sharing. As a wine and coffee shop, Grape and Bean of course retails wine by the bottle and coffee by the pound. I find that they are an excellent resource for gift baskets and they'll really put the time in to help you make your best selection.

The Sugar Cube is located two blocks north of King St. on Lee St. not far from the Torpedo Factory. The Sugar Cube is an upscale confectionery and treat shop that provides everything you'd expect from a candy store and a bit more. The Sugar Cube offers:
- traditional
favorites,
- innovative interpretations of the classics,
- and candies that push the boundaries of global flavors.
The sweets at the Sugar Cube are as varied as sea salt infused Scotch bars to Haribo gummy bears, but they all share
the common elements of superior quality and freshness. The owners Kim and Alyssa Theodore claim that they have
personally tasted and approved every item offered for sale at the Sugar Cube.
The Sugar Cube is just one example of what makes Old Town Alexandria so special. This is a neighborhood where it's not difficult to find caring entrepreneurs who are experts in their fields. As such they bring a higher level of quality and service to the products they offer. |

This weekend Julie and I went to Old Town with the Alexandria Fun with Friends Group to enjoy the Alexandria Art Festival. The Art Festival occurs every year around this time and features artists and craftsmen from around the area.

King Street closes to vehicular traffic and artists set-up stalls in the street. It's an easy way to enjoy lots of art from lots of folks. The weather was very co-operative, neither too hot nor too cold.

This 12 foot tall image of a koi caught my eye, as did many smaller pieces.

I found that my camera was drawn to the larger pieces, but this is probably because I knew they would photograph well. There were many smaller items for sale too. However, many of us felt that this year's festival seemed to offer more pieces that would be welcomed in a restaurant or hotel lobby than usual and a few number of the smaller pieces that look nice in a home.

There were several musicians playing up and down the street. This harpist sang like an angel, but I have to admit that my favorite was the steel drum player.

We walked all the way up to Washington Street before turning around and making way back to the Potomac. After some discussion the group voted to eat at the Charthouse. At the Charthouse, the ladies had a little wine and we enjoyed some relaxed conversation and then dinner. For my part, I think the food at the Charthouse is good, but not great. Even though it's a little pricey, it's worth it because of the pleasant views of the Potomac that are offered.

I took a walk on waterfront in Old Town Alexandria VA last night. The temperature was absolutely perfect as was the humidity. There were crowds, but it wasn't too much. I saw folks rushing to the Nina Dandy and other boats for an evening of cruising. There were several street musicians playing King St. At the pass-thru under the Torpedo Factory, a gentleman was playing the saxophone. And down along the water a street magician was showing his stuff. The balloon men were there creating animals and entertaining the children. A fortune teller was portending the future. A parrot rescue group had a flock of parrots and similar birds which were available for photos.
But then a light misting rain started to fall and the crowds scattered. At first they hid in the Food Court and on the trolley. The musicians were the first to pack, and they packed quickly to ensure their instruments weren't damaged. The mule drawn carriage pulled off and soon the streets were quiet. We walked around a bit, enjoying the peace and quiet. And then we were gone as well.

Would you like to get to know Old Town Alexandria VA? I'll tell you one of the best ways to see a few sites and learn more about our fair city: take a carriage ride. Our carriage was pulled by a hard-working mule. Her owner tells us she loves to pull. As she clopped slowly down the side streets of Old Town, her owner filled in details about houses and locations that we passed. For me, most of the information was old hat, but I couldn't help but think this would be a great way for a tourist or new resident to get to know the city. The fee for the ride was down right reasonable and I was impressed with the mule's strength as she pulled up and down hill along Old Town's waterfront.
After she dropped us off we snapped this picture from Market Square. There in front of Burke and Herbert she seemed more in place with the surroundings than the cars who shared her road.

The goal of the Alexandria Fun with Friends Group is to have fun and
make friends through gaming get-togethers, social activities and local
excursions. This group has has also organized events around laser tag, karaoke, bowling,
ballroom dancing and the theater. We've even hosted a few barbecues.
Most of us are not experts in these activities, but some of us are, we
enjoy teaching others about our favored hobbies. Our group
provides a great venue for making friends and staying active around
Alexandria.
On Saturday July 26th, the group will be renting kayaks and canoes at the Belle Haven Marina. We'll probably to paddle upstream to Jones Point, disembark, stretch our
legs and then coast downstream back to the marina. Some folks like to
head for the marsh to see waterfowl. The
marina offers kayaks, canoes and I think they have johnboats or
rowboats if that's your preference. The idea is to hit the river before
things get too hot, work up an appetite and then take in a brunch at a
nearby restaurant.
The
boats rent for between $20 and $35 per hour. We'll take at least an
hour and might get a discount if we have enough people.
There is no charge or obligation to join the group. Sign up here and more details here.

BTW ... he's a nice dog.

Summertime in Alexandria is loads of fun. Tourists descend on our fare city, but we're glad to have them as our guests.

One of the places that you have to visit when you're in town is also a favorite spot of residents: the Alexandria waterfront. The docks behind the Torpedo Factory Art Center are always bustling with activity. Every few paces you'll find a street musician, street magician and other entertainer. There are numerous restaurants here: most of them quite nice.

If you're looking for a little fun on the water, you might want to take a cruse on the Admiral Tilp. The Admiral Tilp is docked here at the end of King Street and Union Street. The Admiral Tilp departs on the hour, so if you miss her, she'll be back. The Admiral Tilp offers a narrated tour under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, past National Harbor and down to Jones Point. The on-board guide provides a historical and contemporary context to what you will witness on board.

Cinema
The Old Town Theatre serves up arty, independent and off-beat cinema as well as blockbuster hits in Old Town. The Old Town Theatre has great ambiance and is one of the few area theaters that sells alcholic beverages.
The AMC Theatre at the Hoffman Center, Kingstowne 16 and Regal at Potomac Yard hosts blockbusters and mainstream movies in modern movie houses.

Theatre
Capitol Steps
Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.
In the years that followed, many of the Steps
ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and
although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol
Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of
eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective
House and Senate staff experience.
Arena Stage
The core purpose of Arena Stage
is to produce huge plays of all that is passionate, exuberant,
profound, deep and dangerous in the American spirit. Arena has broad
shoulders and a capacity to produce anything from vast epics to charged
dramas to robust musicals. Our focus is on theater of the Americas; we
produce American classics, premieres of new plays and contemporary
stories. Our Arena is a forum, a coliseum, a place for audiences to
argue, discuss and meet each other over the theatrical divide. At the
center is art; all other programs thrive in concentric circles
supporting the art.
Wolf Trap
As America's National Park for the Performing Arts, Wolf Trap
plays a valuable leadership role in both the local and national
performing arts communities. Through a wide range of artistic and
education programs, Wolf Trap enhances our nation's cultural life and
ensures that the arts remain accessible and affordable to the broadest
possible audience.
Nissan Pavilion
Nissan Pavilion at Stone
Ridge is an outdoor live performance amphitheatre with a 25,000 fan
capacity, the largest in the Washington Metropolitan area. The Pavilion
is located in semi-rural Prince William County which is approximately
35 miles west of our neighborhood.
Kennedy Center
The Kennedy Center, located on 17 acres overlooking the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., is America's living memorial to President Kennedy as well as the nation's busiest arts facility, presenting more than 3,000 performances each year. Touring Kennedy Center productions and its television, radio, and Internet broadcasts reach millions around the world. As part of the Kennedy Center's Performing Arts for Everyone outreach program, hundreds of free performances are offered each year featuring national and local artists; these include early-evening concerts on the Millennium Stage, dozens of performances during the annual Open House Arts Festival, and daily concerts of seasonal music in December as part of Holidays at the Kennedy Center. Since 1999, the Millennium Stage performances have been broadcast live over the Internet and digitally archived on the Kennedy Center's website.
The Shakespeare Theatre
Since its founding in 1985, The Shakespeare Theatre
has endeavored to be the nation's leading force in the presentation and
preservation of classic theatre. Our core mission is to present classic
theatre in an accessible, skillful, imaginative, American style that
honors playwrights' language and intentions while viewing their plays
through a 21st-century lens. With the formation of the Harman Center
for the Arts---which includes the new Sidney Harman Hall and the existing
Lansburgh Theatre---the Shakespeare Theatre Company will become a
national destination theatre offering a broad range of works to
audiences in the greater-Washington area and across the nation.
Fords Theatre
Fords Theatre is a live,
working theatre located in downtown Washington, DC. As a national
historic and cultural site welcoming visitors from across the nation,
Ford's Theatre blends its rich history with performance excellence in
serving as a living tribute to President Lincoln's love of the
performing arts. When Ford's Theatre re-opened its doors in 1968 -
after having been closed 103 years - it truly was reclaimed as a
national treasure for all Americans, and those of us who work here are
mindful of that legacy and grateful that Ford's Theatre once again is a
vibrant showcase for the performing arts that President Lincoln so
appreciated.

River Towers is located near the George Washington Parkway and the Potomac River. Here's a link to some of the many bike trails, jogging paths and hiking trails in the surrounding park system.
The trails and roads at River Towers tie into a network of scenic routes that follow the river from Mount Vernon (5 miles south) to National Airport (5 miles north) and thence to Washington DC and beyond.

The nearby bike/jog paths are closed to motor vehicles..
On the bike paths
Serious bikers often ride on the Parkway itself, but recreational bikers prefer the easy bends of the local bike trails. Some residents actually use these trails to bike work or to the Metro.

Bikers, joggers and bird watchers enjoy trails.

The bike trail weaves between the Parkway
and the River through woods and meadows.
Many bikers enjoy a trip to the marina. |

Years ago I wrote a game called Battlestorm and as part of the promotion tour, I travelled to game conventions all over the US. The largest and best of these game conventions like GenCon and Origins Game Fair would have 30,000 to 50,000 attendees who come to play games, attend lectures, see old friends and make new friends. It was my first exposure the convention circuit and it made quite an impression on me.

At these game conventions I met many celebrities, mostly actors from science fiction shows and movies, and some authors. In addition I met many gamers from around the country. I didn't often get the chance to play games at these conventions because I was too busy selling my own game, but I did get the opportunity to tour the displays and meet others before the gates opened to the general public.
Today, I don't attend game conventions in a professional capacity, but I still attend one or two conventions a year. My wife Julie and I enjoy the drive up to the Lancaster Resort and Convention Center in Lancaster. Smaller conventions like Historicon and Cold Wars up in Lancaster have perhaps 5,000 attendees. However, these smaller conventions are closer and they still offer a lot of fun. Most conventions last 3 to 4 days. When I was a presenter I would stay for the entire convention, but as an attendee I rarely stay more than 1 day.

Reflecting the fun I'd seen at these conventions, I hatched the idea of bringing a smaller version to Alexandria. Using our group Alexandria Fun with Friends we host a mini-convention on a nearly monthly basis. The Microcon is much smaller in every respect. We usually have 30 to 70 attendees. Instead of taking up space in a convention hall, we usually occupy the Club Room of a local condominium.
Attendees come to learn, teach and share games. Together, we play social games, board games, card games and role-playing games to get to know each other and to have fun. The fun starts at 2 in the afternoon and at dinner time we take a break to eat a meal. At a big convention, vendors are ever-present selling everything from carnie-food to gourmet meals, but our Microcon doesn't have any food vendors.

Many times, Julie has made food like chili or enchiladas or lasagna. Sometimes we have had the food catered. Most recently, the food at the Microcon was provided by Dishes of India, an Indian restaurant located in the Belle View Shopping Center.

If you've never had Indian food, or if you love Indian food, I highly recommend Dishes of India. The lunch buffet is the best way to take a tour of what the restaurant has to offer. The food is generally mild and very "American-friendly", meaning there are options on the buffet which will please the pickiest palate.
For example, you might not like Indian food, but I know you like fire-roasted chicken. Vegetarians will enjoy simple foods like potatoes or green beans will Indian spices.
If you need an event catered, contact Gopal at Dishes of India. I found him to be friendly helpful and accommodating. He tailored a menu to fit our budget and our needs and there was ample food for our attendees.

Julie and I went sailing again. This time we put in at the Belle Haven Marina near Belle View condos and New Alexandria.

The marina has plenty of sailboats, canoes and kayaks for rent. They also offer lessons. Check out the spelling on the sign.

We had a great time on the Potomac. The winds were steady and fairly strong.

We were on the river until nearly sundown.

"As a courtroom drama, it's thrilling. As social commentary, it's unforgettable...maybe even life-changing." -- USA Today
The Little Theatre of Alexandria (LTA) presents Moises Kaufman's Gross
Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde. Kaufman, known for his
treatment of the Matthew Shepard murder in The Laramie Project, has
crafted a gripping, edge-of-your-seat legal thriller about the infamous
trials of Wilde who was accused of committing "gross indecency" with
other male persons. Using the actual transcripts of the trials;
diaries, autobiographies, biographies, and letters of participants in
the events; and modern biographies and analysis, Kaufman has created
pulsating theater that moves beyond historic courtroom drama to modern
social commentary in both humorous and heartfelt ways.
Now in its 75th Season, LTA is the oldest, continuously operating
theater in the entire Washington Metropolitan area. Founded in 1934,
the nomadic thespians performed at various venues including Gadsby's
Tavern and a blacksmith shop. In 1961, the group performed its first
show in their own theater located at the corners of Wolfe and St. Asaph
Streets. A virtual who's who of Washington Society has attended the
theater including several Presidents, and it boasts some very
prestigious alumni including Marcia Gay Harden and Dermot Mulroney.
With only 216 seats, LTA is a little theater, but it offers a big
experience.
The show is directed by Frank D. Shutts II and performs April 18
though May 9 with public performances on Wednesday through Saturday
evenings at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 3 pm. Tickets are $18 - $15,
and reservations may be made online or by
calling the box office at 703-683-0496.

On May 15th 2009, several of members of the Alexandria Fun with Friends group will be in attendance along with a friendly
crowd of regulars at Studio One. The host welcomes everyone and plays a
variety of dances: rumba's, waltzes, foxtrots and swing dances are
common here. The dance floor is quite large and you'll have
plenty of opportunities to dance with new partners. The regulars and
are members are open and welcoming but no dance instruction is offered
here. Those looking for a pick-up scene will be disappointed. It's not
that you can't meet and make friends here---you most definitely can.
But, this is not a place to find "the hook-up". Those looking for a
wholesome active outing with friendly easy-going people will have a
great time. The host and attendees chip in for a potluck of
snacks, desserts and nibblings along with some soft drinks. The cover
charge is only $5. There is no extra charge for drinks or food.
Attendees are encouraged (but not required) to bring a drink or snack. The
place is not metro accessible and is located just outside Alexandria in Fairfax County.

D.A.D.A. is an enthusiastic group of adults fans of Harry Potter. They describe themselves as "somewhat like Star Wars fans in that they're a bit obsessive, dress up
in costumes, and go to conventions." One of the members also says, "I like to think we're cuter and
less nerdy as a whole." At any rate, they love "The Boy Who Lived". At their next gathering on May 9th, they're having even themed around Harry Potter games. This includes Harry Potter-themed Clue as well as some Quidditch, and possibly Pictionary and Charades. Attendees should dress casual, hats and brooms are not required. Bring a snack to
share, wizard-themed food is entirely optional.
They're also going to
watch a short movie clip from "Yes Man". It's from a scene in which Jim Carrey
character goes to a Harry Potter party. Yes, they mock those who don't understand Potter, but they also mock themselves. If you have any other Harry Potter games, they would be most welcome! They're actively looking for someone with a Harry Potter version of "Scene It"? Here's a quick quiz to see if you qualify to attend this event: - Have you read all seven books and seen all five movies?
- Do you know the exact date and time when movie 6 is being released? Are you taking off work to see it?
- Are you a Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin? You will be asked.
The
whole gang will probably be about 30 or more attendees. For more details about the location and to RSVP check the Alexandria Fun with Friends group.

One of the great things about life in Alexandria VA is the proximity to two public marinas: one at Belle Haven and the other at Potowmack Landing north of Old Town. I have always wanted to sail, and yesterday Julie surprised me by signing us up for a social sail with the Sailing Club of Washington.

The Sailing Club of Washington is a group of over 400 people that includes a mixture of folks who have never sailed but want to learn and old salts who've been sailing for years along with those who simply enjoy socializing with other sailing enthusiasts. The Sailing Club of Washington (SCOW) is a 501(c)(7) organization (a social club) that was originally chartered on July 12, 1966 "to provide the membership thereof with the opportunity and instrumentalities to become expert in the art of sailing for their individual and mutual education, benefit and enjoyment."

This boat used to be a club boat, but it's owned by a member who still shares it with the club. The Sailing Club has six boats:
- four 19' Flying Scots;
- two 25' Catalinas
The boats are kept at the Washington Sailing Marina just south of National Airport. SCOW offers classes, individual use of our boats, club sponsored activities and a place for sailors in the D.C. area to come together and enjoy the sport and recreation of sailing.

We were excited as we prepared to board the vessel. It was a short walk along the dock and then we boarded.

National Airport is visible behind us. The winds were light and steady, perfect for beginners.

There were several other vessels nearby, most were sailors but there were a few flat-bottom fishermen out as well.

After we were underway, the skipper let me man the tiller! What fun! I had to make sure that we caught the right wind, without hitting posts or other boats.

Julie snapped a couple of pictures of me having a blast.

Eventually the sun started to set and it was time to head back to port.

What a great club! I can't endorse this activity enough. The fees are reasonable, the company was pleasant. And I really like sailing.

We'll be back another day.
If you're looking for a home near the marina, you might consider some of the following communities:

The Microconvention is a great chance to go in a gaming binge, or just meet some new people.
This event usually runs several hours, but don't feel obligated to attend the entire event. At the Microcon, about 50 local folks gather to play a wide variety of games. We play everything from light-hearted social games and party games to head-scratching strategy games to an RPG or two. At the Microconvention you'll have the opportunity to play games you've never seen before and to make new friends.
The group's motto is: fun, food & games! This is a relaxed social environment with games that range from simple to complex. If you've never been to a Microcon, it's a great opportunity to meet some fun folks, play your favorite games, and enjoy good times. Have a game you've been dying to play? Bring it!
Games
We generally have 30 to 60 people playing a variety of games over the course of several hours. We take care to have a mix of games: strategy games, card games, social games, traditional games, wargames and role-playing games. We used to post a schedule of tables and games, but now we just show up and mill about.
Food
The event fee INCLUDES THE FOOD. (Such a deal!) Event organizers will provide snacks and beverages as well as dinner. This month's dinner will be Italian themed. Mangia, Mangia!

Venue
We host this event at River Towers. River Towers is accessible by Metro bus from Huntington Station. During non-rush hour weekends, the bus comes to River Towers from Huntington Station every hour.

Friday April 3rd, several members of the Alexandria Fun with Friends group will be in attendance along with a friendly
crowd of regulars at Studio One.
The
place is not metro accessible and is located in the Shopping Center off
Rt. 1 behind Chevy's and Ruby Tuesdays. The entrance itself is between Bed Bath and Beyond and the Discount Superstore. Enter at the corner and proceed to the second floor. We'll see you there! RSVP and more details here.

The Alexandria Fun with Friends group is organizing a trip to the Masonic Memorial in Old Town Alexandria. From the website:
The George Washington Masonic Memorial is more than a colossal memorial and museum. It is a tourist attraction and destination; research center and library; community center; performing arts center and concert hall; banquet and celebration site; and meeting site for local and countless visiting Masonic lodges and organizations. However, first and foremost, it is a memorial to honor and perpetuate the memory, character and virtues of the man who best exemplifies what Freemasons are and ought to be, Brother George Washington.
For the longest time, I had no idea that you could enter this landmark of the Alexandria skyline. Since then, I've toured the George Washington Masonic Memorial several times and each time the structure has revealed something new to me. If nothing else, the view from high atop Shooter's Hill is spectacular. If you've never been, I highly recommend this site whether you go with us or not. If you have been, come anyway and then join us for dinner.
As before, after the touring the museum, we'll stop at a nearby restaurant. Last time we went to an Old Town attraction we then caravaned over to Ted's Montana Grill (always a favorite of mine). The conversation and the company was at least as much fun as the trip. Ted's is nearby with fairly easy parking but if you have a better idea, drop me an email or make mention in your RSVP and we'll consider it.
There is no charge for the museum but a donation to the memorial's building fund is appreciated. RSVP and details on when the group is getting together are found here.

This group's goal is to have fun and make friends through gaming get-togethers, social activities and local excursions.
We like games because they are great way to make friends and
have fun. We play a wide variety of games including social games,
RPG's, strategy games, euro-games, card games or anything else our
members enjoy. Here's your opportunity to learn or play Mah Jongg!
Mah Jongg Madness
Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 6:30PM
Mah Jongg (or "Maajh", as it is usually called) is a fascinating
rummy-like game played with tiles rather than cards. The game
originated in China, dating back to the time of Confucius. It was
originally played solely by the ruling classes; the Mandarins refused
to permit other inhabitants of the country to enjoy the pleasure of
this aristocratic pastime. The introduction of Ma Cheuck, the game of
the Sparrows, to all classes was met with instant popularity. To this
day, Mah Jongg remains the most popular game in the Orient.
Interestingly, the rules in North China differ from those in South
China. There are several versions of Maajh, but each fall under
two broad categories: American Mah Jongg and Chinese Mah Jongg.
American Maajh differs from International Maajh in several ways:
It uses a card of Standard Hands, against which all games are played; these cards are changed annually.
It uses more tiles, notably the Joker.
The game is started with "Charleston", or the passing of 3 unwanted tiles from one player to another.
It uses Jokers to complete...

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, The Athenaeum is home to the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association (NVFAA). Constructed between 1851-52, the Athenaeum is a Greek revival building with a rich history. The building is named after the Greek Goddess of wisdom, Athena. Over the years The Athenaeum has taken many names and was used for many functions. Together with the Lyceum, the Athenaeum is a foundation of Alexandria's Greek neo-classic buildings.
The building has a long history of use in Alexandria. Before the Civil War, Robert E. Lee banked here, when the building was known as the Bank of the Old Dominion. During the Civil War it was occupied by Federals and home to the Union Army Commissary Headquarters. In 1905, the bank was converted from commercial to industrial purposes. The building was used by the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop as a place to grind talcum into powder. In 1925, the talcum factory became the Free Methodist Church.
NVFAA purchased the Athenaeum in 1964. Since then, restorations have taken place using the funds from the members of the NVFAA and the National Park Service Save America's Treasure Grant.
Recent art exhibits include Song For Europe by Mark Cameron Boyd is participatory installation using his signature "text bisection" process on a series of chalkboards to address four different languages from European origin such as Greek, Latin, French, and English. This exhibit is on display from August 16th - September 21st.
Music is another art form featured at The Athenaeum. Up and coming:
- September 11th - Tom Dews with Patricia Cooper.
- October 9th - Lori Grigsby & Sandy Moyer with Patricia Cooper
- December 11th - BumpKin Pie
Yoga classes are available at The Athenaeum. Instructor Betsy Huffman welcomes drop-ins. Class fees are only $18 per class. Classes are Mondays 11:30am
The Athenaeum is available for rentals for weddings, receptions, parties, business meetings and seminars.

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra--- founded in 1954---has worked hard over the past 50+ years to establish a reputation for excellence. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra ("ASO") is dedicated to providing quality, affordable and accessible music in the greater Metropolitan area of Northern Virginia. The ASO also strives to foster a life-long appreciation of symphonic music in area children through arts and music education in schools. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra supports thematic and inter-arts programming with a mixture of contemporary music and classical pieces. The ASO prides itself on powerful performances under the directorship of Kim Allen Kluge.
The ASO is fully professional with a budget of $750,000 earned through ticket sales and program book advertising. (The ASO also receives many contributions from public and private donors, foundations and generous individuals.)
The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra produces eight concerts (five regular season, the Alexandria Birthday Concert, the Holiday Concert, and the Children's Festival). The ASO also arranges concerts for Alexandria public school students in June.
In 2002, the ASO moved to the critically acclaimed Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center. The Schlesinger Center is metro accessible and located on the Alexandria Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College. This center was designed by world-class acoustical engineers to achieve an atmosphere of sound that is perfect for musical concerts. The concert hall is relatively small, seating only about one thousand people. It features unobstructed views from every seat. The size of the view, the acoustics and the intimacy of the venue ensure a wonderful experience for concert goers.

My colleagues in Hawaii and Florida and even in Jackson Hole or Las
Vegas, love to post pictures that make me drool with envy. Stunning
beaches, snow-capped mountains and striking desert oasis condos we do
not have in the Washington Metro Area, but we do have access to our
national capital. And every four years we have access to history of a
different sort, when our nation installs a President.
Several of my friends in Northern Virginia made the trek to witness
President Obama's swearing in. For most folks it started at 6 am at the
Metro.

Even at 6 am the line to get on the train was long. For those who
were lucky enough to get a seat on the first train, there was a wait
for a half-hour or more before the train was underway. When the trains
arrived, you begain to get an idea of just how big a number 2 million
is.

The crowd was pleasant, but the numbers were overwhelming. It took 45 minutes just to get out of the station.

Top side was like a jail break, as people were glad to finally see the light of day.

The masses of people were staggering, even if they were dwarfed by the touchstones of democracy like the Washington Monument.

This was one of the better view spots open to the public on
Inauguration day. In this picture, Obama is about a quarter of a pixel
high, so it's a little tough to make out his expression.

But the Jumbotron was there if you needed to see what was happening.

Then at the end of the day, it's a walk back to the Metro. Small price to pay to be a witness to history. |

Noon on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Barack H. Obama will be sworn in
on the steps of the Capitol as the 56th President of the United States
of America. The City of Alexandria is expecting a record number of
visitors and preparations are underway for our guests and friends.

Jumbotron in Market Square
At the heart of Old Town is Market Square. Market Square is at the
City Hall building, 301 King St. It is a brick courtyard and gathering
point for city residents. The Presidential swearing-in ceremony and
parade will be on Jumbotron (a giant TV) live on Inauguration Day at
Market Square from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Area Road Closures and Bridge Restrictions
The City of Alexandria states: "Road and bridge closures and
security restrictions around the U.S. Capitol and the Inauguration
parade route will make traveling by car directly from Northern Virginia
to Washington, DC impossible beginning at 2 a.m. on January 20. The
City urges residents---whether attending the Inauguration, going to work,
or staying in Alexandria---to make plans and stay informed."
So far, the road closures and bridge restrictions generally begin at
2 AM on Tuesday January 20th (early on Inauguration Day). At around
that time, personal vehicles will not be allowed to enter Washington
from Northern Virginia. Residents and visitors in Northern Virginia are
urged to take public transit to the Inauguration activities. If you
insist on driving, drivers will only be able to enter Washington by
driving in from designated Maryland routes. Road closures and detours:
- Traffic on I-395 traffic heading toward Washington will be
diverted at the Springfield interchange (exits 170B and 170C) onto
1-495 North (Inner Loop) or I-495/95 East (Outer Loop). Southbound 395
remain open to traffic.
- The 14th Street Bridge, Roosevelt Bridge, and Key Bridge will be
closed to general traffic. Only authorized vehicles will be allowed to
cross these bridges. The Memorial Bridge and the Chain Bridge will be
open to pedestrians only.
- North Washington Street at Montgomery Street to Reagan National Airport will be closed.
- The George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed in both directions from I-495 to the 14th Street Bridge.
I-95/395 HOV Schedule
HOV on I-95/395 will begin at 3 AM, after 5 AM only buses and
authorized vehicles will be permitted to use the I-95/395 HOV lanes
from Route 234/Dumfries to Washington. The HOV lanes will reverse at 8
PM with restrictions lasting until 9 pm or later.
Metro and VRE on Inauguration
As federal, state and local agencies continue to develop plans for the Inauguration, information on road closures may change. Please check this page for updates.
Alexandria VA and Washington DC are expecting record turnouts for
the 56th Presidential Inauguration. The public is urged to use public
transportation and to arrive early. The best way into Washington DC
from Northern Virginia and Alexandria on Inauguration Day will be Metrorail and Virginia Railway Express.
Metro claims they will have public parking spaces available at all
Northern Virginia Metro stations. It will be interesting to see how
this is accomplished at some stations. For travel around the area on
Inauguration Day, Metro is probably a good choice. To plan your trip
via the Metrobus or Metrorail, use Metro’s Trip Planner; for bus travel within Alexandria, visit the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) system, or ride the Free King Street Trolley, which runs from the Metrorail King Street Station to the City’s Waterfront.
For more detailed information please check the Secret Service Announces Security Information for the 2009 Presidential Inaugural (PDF)
For more travel options to, and within Washington, D.C., and other important information, please check out CarlyleDistrict.com.
Walking
Persons walking from to the Inauguration from Alexandria have a number of options, including the Mount Vernon Trail.
A less hearty walk would start at Arlington National Cemetary. You may
wish to Metro to Arlington National Cemetary and walk the Memorial
Bridge into DC. WMATA has produced and provided a commemorative walking guide and map. Bicycling
The Washington Area Bicycle Association (WABA) will be operating two
free bicycle valet parking areas on January 20, including one at the
Jefferson Memorial. Visit WABA for more information including maps, bike rental information and valet tips. The City of Alexandria's Online Bike Map can prove useful as can the Regional Bike Path Route-Finder. Bicycles will not be allowed on Metrorail all weekend long, beginning Saturday, January 17th. Bicycles will be allowed on MetroBus throughout the Inaugural weekend.

Founded in 1934, the Little Theatre of Alexandria began as a small
play-reading group in Old Town Alexandria. Since 1934, the theatre has
produced over 300 shows. Over the years, audience members included a
veritable "Who’s Who" of Washington. President Harry S. Truman attended
on more than one occasion, and notes say that Lynda Bird Johnson even
participated as a serving wench! In June 2001, President George W. Bush
made LTA his first Washington-area theatrical outing when he came to
see his sister-in-law perform in Neil Simon’s Proposals.
About the Play
"Welcome to Greater Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where
the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. In this
hilarious send up of small town life, two actors create the entire
population of Tuna in a 'tour de farce' of quick changes and of comic
characterizations. There’s nothing like a serving of 'tuna' to cure
those January blues!"
Tickets
Tickets are $18. If the group has 15 in attendance attendees will
receive $3 discount. (Yay!) About 10 days before the play the group
will firm up attendance and collect money from attendees. Prepayment is required because we'll reserve seats for the group and we'll have tickets waiting at the box office.
Socializing
There is always a social component to our outings with the chance to
make new friends and contacts. The group has not yet decided whether it
would be more fun to meet for dinner before the play or if it would be
more fun to enjoy a few drinks after the play where we could discuss
the performance. Please indicate in your RSVP what you would prefer.

The War of 1812 Re-enactment will take place at the Carlyle House Historic Park on 121 N. Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday August 23rd, 10am-4pm.
On 1814, Alexandria surrendered to the British Royal Navy, commanded
by James Gordon, and forced into paying a ransom of flour, cotton,
tobacco, rum, and sugar. The capture of the city allowed the British to
burn public buildings and lead to the fleeing of the government and
President James Madison.
The Carlyle House, a fixture in Old Town,
is a wonderful venue for such an event with over 250 years of history.
Many Alexandria newcomers are unaware that the Carlyle District, home
to the condos of Carlyle Towers at King St. Metro are named after this estate.

Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country, and it has always been in the forefront of the restoration field. Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America and is open 365 days a year. Mount Vernon was the home of our first President George Washington. The grounds are well-preserved as is the home itself.
Alexandria Lyceum is a grand hall built in the late 1800's to provide a place for lectures, scientific experiments and quiet reading. Since that time, it has been a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation's first Bicentennial Center. In 1985, The Lyceum became Alexandria's History Museum, providing exhibitions, school programs, lectures and concerts, volunteer opportunities and space for rental functions for the community. The Lyceum Museum Shop carries a wide variety of maps, books, note cards and special items related to Alexandria's history. The present-day Lyceum Company serves the museum as a membership and fund-raising organization.

Walk to Old Towne! Old Towne is filled with
historic landmarks, carriage rides and walking history tours.
Just a few miles down George Washington Parkway is the nationally renown collection of museums called the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is a wonderful zoo.
Civil War enthusiasts might want to inspect Fort Willard just as President Lincoln did. Fort Willard has long since abandoned its military use and is now a quiet park like Fort Hunt.
If you are interested in architecture and local history visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House or the Woodlawn Plantation. The Collingwood Library and musuem is dedicated to providing information about our national heritage to the American Public. Collingwood is available to anyone who cares to learn of the heroic efforts made by American Patriots, particularly members of the Masonic Fraternity, in founding and developing this, the greatest nation on earth.
Collingwood is a resource as a local library but also interesting place to visit in it's own right.

Old Town Alexandria is famous for many things: its quaint 18th Century architecture, its many shops and boutiques, the waterfront and Torpedo Factory. But Old Town is also well known for its many diverse restaurants.
The bustling brick walkways of Old Town are framed by dozens of of
establishments to quench your thirst or offer a bite to eat. Sweet
treats are found at the ice cream shops and candy shops, and a cold
drink can be purchased at an old fashioned public house. Traditional
colonial fare is found at Gadsby's Tavern and elsewhere.
If you're in the mood for something different it's easy to find
ethnic cuisine from India, Vietnam, Ireland, the Mediterranean, the
Middle East, France, China and more. Do you prefer seafood and fine
dining on linen table cloths? Or are you in the mood for a juicy burger
and brown paper bag full of fresh-cut fries from one of Five Guy's
first locations. Perhaps you're in the mood for something trendy and
bright, or dinner theatre?
It's easy to access Old Town via the King St. Metro
and the Trolley and there are several convenient parking garages near
the heart of Old Town. For my part, I have a hard time choosing from so
many great restaurants, so I often let the parking decide. That is, I
don't look for a restaurant, instead I look for a parking spot and then
there is surely a great place wherever I park. I was curious just how
many places are right here in Old Town and here's the list I came up
with.
