Cameron Station, located conveniently off of Duke Street near the West End of Alexandria, Virginia, is a collection of single-family and multi-family townhouses and condominiums built in the architectural style of 19th century Colonial America. The community was constructed and designed with the intention of recreating the traditional, old-fashioned feel of small town-Americana. From its Colonial sidewalks and perfectly manicured parks to its brick-front commercial buildings and ornamental street lamps, the Cameron Station community captures the atmospheric effects of an old photograph while maintaining modern recreational and social facilities. Community residents have access to a free shuttle bus which runs commuters to and from the nearby Van Dorn Metro Station during prime metro-transit hours both in the morning and the evening.
The Cameron Station Club is located at the epicenter of the Cameron Station community and the amenities featured therein include a fitness center and state-of-the-art gym, an outdoor pool, business and social meeting rooms and a community kitchen. Within walking distance of the Cameron Station community are a nearby athletic field and playground, as well as a 50-acre city park, several dog parks, picnic areas, and walking and bicycling paths. Residents can also enjoy the Charles E. Beatley Library, Alexandria’s main Public Library Branch, located just across the street. In addition, Cameron Station is located just minutes away from Old Town Alexandria, where shopping and entertainment are abundant. Residents can also enjoy the ease of access to many of the major highways including I-395 and I-495. With its premiere location and outstanding communal facilities, Cameron Station is an ideal residential community for young professionals and families both.

Cameron Station is located just off Duke St. in Alexandria VA adjacent to Ben Brenman Park and near Holmes Run Park. The Cameron Station community has single family homes, townhomes and condominiums. The architectural style of Cameron Station calls to mind nearby Old Town and the historic 18th and 19th century buildings of that part of the city. At the same time Cameron Station is planned to function like an old-fashioned Norman Rockwell small town. The hallmarks of this community are broad avenues lined brick sidewalks, trees and colonial street lamps. Cameron Station has many assorted patches of greenery called "pocket parks".

Cameron Station's townhomes are stately and impressive.

The condos of Cameron Station include Carlton Place, Condominiums of Cameron Station Blvd, Main Street, Oakland Hall, Residences at Cameron Station and Woodland Hall.

There is rarely any traffic in Cameron Station.

Cameron Station has several neighborhood shops and markets. For a closer look at Cameron Station check Cameron Station Info or Cameron Station dot com.

The Templeton of Alexandria is located in the West End of Alexandria on Reynolds St. Reynolds is just off Duke St. sort of between Landmark Mall and I-495. The building's address is 250 S Reynolds St.
Alexandria, VA 22304-4437. For insurance questions or maintenance issues contact the office at
(703) 370-3714.
Check Templeton to see what's currently for sale.

The stylings of Templeton are very reminiscent of the Alexandria House---a luxury high-rise nearby in Old Town Alexandria. Both communities feature high-rise buildings with broad and spacious balconies that wrap-around the building. Both communities have floor to ceiling glass, often sliding doors, in each room, with multiple egresses to the balcony.

The entrance to the Templeton is warm and inviting with lots of flowers and well-tended shrubs. The rolling hills of Reynolds offer some sound-dampening properties that make this a pleasant and quiet corner of Alexandria.

The gardens behind the Templeton are a great little hideaway. Formal patios and plants in containers make a pleasant backdrop for a peaceful moment in a busy city. The pool is tucked away from the city. The community grills are ready for your backyard barbecue.

I stopped by the Watergate at Landmark this weekend. It was a rainy day, but the rain seemed bring out the colors so I snapped a few pictures.
This is the putting green as seen from a balcony at the Watergate.
And then a look back toward the pool and the community center.
The unit itself was in near perfect condition. These pictures really don't do it justice. The putting green and pools are just some of the many amenities of the Watergate at Landmark. Among other things the Watergate features a 38,000-square foot, multi-purpose community center and an adjoining fitness center with
- heated pool,
- lap lanes,
- exercise, and
- sauna.
This community center has many ares of interest to residents: - a library;
- card rooms;
- meeting rooms;
- media rooms;
- billiards and ping-pong; and
- resident-service
desk.
Conveniences such as an ATM machine, a unisex hair
salon, a sandwich-shop, and a convenience store also are on-site in the community center. In addition to the many amenities of the community center, residents can enjoy:
- Outdoor pool with trellis-covered whirlpool and waterfall
- Children's play area at the outdoor pool
- Gazebos and picnic areas
- Golf
- Measured track
- Courts for racquet sports
- A "Tot Lot" playground
- Volleyball
- Youth center
Condo fees are a little higher at the Watergate but when you figure that the fee in includes insurance, gas, trash, water, sewer, heating, cooling electricity and the many amenities of Watergate: it's well worth it.

New to the Area?
This is an update on an old article I put together for people who are brand new to Northern Virginia. Because of
the many employment opportunities and because of the pleasant nature of
the city of Alexandria, Alexandria often and consistently rates as one
of the nation's best cities. If you're brand new to the area, it's hard
to know where to start when looking for a home or residence. There are TOO MANY CHOICES. Before you can find your house you have to find your neighborhood. Before you find your neighborhood you have to find your way around the city. For this reason, a quick description of the components of Alexandria is helpful.

Old Town
Old Town
(sometimes called Olde Town, Old Towne or Olde Towne) is the heart of Alexandria. As the name implies, Old Town is the oldest part
of the city. Alexandria was a port in colonial times owing to its location along the Potomac. These days Old Town is found just inside the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and then north
toward Reagan National Airport. Old Town is served by the King St. Metro
and the King St. trolley. With over 100 restaurants, shops, boutiques,
coffee shops, ice cream houses and more, Old Town has both a small
town, upscale and touristy feel. For most folks there is a bit of
prestige attached to an Old Town address. There are two high rises near
the waterfront at the Alexandria House and Port Royal. Old Town Alexandria has many townhouses, row houses and a smaller number single family homes. Click
Old Town
to search listings of properties in Old Town Alexandria.

Del Ray
Although its history doesn't stretch to the colonial days,
Del Ray
is another relatively old neighborhood. Del Ray was founded in 1894 as a
"streetcar suburb" to Washington, DC. Most of Del Ray was built from
the 1890's to the 1950's and retains that small town charm despite
being so close to the center of the universe. Quaint streets with brick
or stone homes are found on streets that branch off from Del Ray's
arteries.
At the heart of Del Ray is the main street: Mount Vernon
Avenue. This where you'll find a hometown mix of shops, restaurants
and hardware stores. Braddock Road metro serves Del Ray and condos such
as Colecroft Station are available here.
Click
Del Ray
for a map of Del Ray and for listings of properties for sale in Del Ray. Or, click
Del Ray
for listings for sale in the Del Ray subdivision of Alexandria.
Arlandria
As the name implies,
Arlandria
at the border of Alexandria City and Arlington County. Arlandia is just
north of Del Ray at terminus of Mount Vernon Avenue. Some residents
also call this neighborhood Chirilagua. Arlandia has many small shops
and restaurants. Click Arlandria
for a map of the general area and to search properties listed for sale in Arlandria.

Eisenhower Valley
The Eisenhower Valley describes the area found along Eisenhower
Avenue. At the western end of Eisenhower Avenue one will find
warehouses and businesses such as FedEx and UPS who appreciate easy
access to the Interstate. Click Eisenhower West
to search property at the west end of Eisenhower, near the Van Dorn Metro station.
On the east end, where Eisenhower Avenue approaches Old Town, you'll

West End
Like the Eisenhower Valley, the
West End
of Alexandria is a mixed bag. Condos and high rises abound in "Condo Canyon" near Landmark
and Lincolnia. But development from the 1950's and 1960's is also found
tucked on side streets and around unexpected corners. The homes around
and near Seminary Road are regarded by many as stately and highly
desirable. Another interesting neighborhood in the West End is Cameron
Station. Cameron Station is a newer development of townhouses and
condos, but the stylings and architecture imitate the best of Old Town.
Cameron Station is relatively close to both Landmark Mall and Old Town.
The West End is well connected to Washington DC via I-395.
The West End is the newest and largest part of the city. The West End
has a diverse selection of restaurants and shops as well as Landmark
Mall and several fine hotels. Fort Ward Park and Museum is found in the
West End
of Alexandria.

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra--- founded in 1954---has worked hard over the past 50+ years to establish a reputation for excellence. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra ("ASO") is dedicated to providing quality, affordable and accessible music in the greater Metropolitan area of Northern Virginia. The ASO also strives to foster a life-long appreciation of symphonic music in area children through arts and music education in schools. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra supports thematic and inter-arts programming with a mixture of contemporary music and classical pieces. The ASO prides itself on powerful performances under the directorship of Kim Allen Kluge.
The ASO is fully professional with a budget of $750,000 earned through ticket sales and program book advertising. (The ASO also receives many contributions from public and private donors, foundations and generous individuals.)
The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra produces eight concerts (five regular season, the Alexandria Birthday Concert, the Holiday Concert, and the Children's Festival). The ASO also arranges concerts for Alexandria public school students in June.
In 2002, the ASO moved to the critically acclaimed Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center. The Schlesinger Center is metro accessible and located on the Alexandria Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College. This center was designed by world-class acoustical engineers to achieve an atmosphere of sound that is perfect for musical concerts. The concert hall is relatively small, seating only about one thousand people. It features unobstructed views from every seat. The size of the view, the acoustics and the intimacy of the venue ensure a wonderful experience for concert goers.

Real estate agents work hard.
Well, let me rephrase that.
I work hard, and every successful real estate agent I know works hard.
I put in long hours. I juggle multiple tasks. I self-motivate. But
sometimes, when you're exhausted ... sometimes when your motivator
needs motivation, you have to wonder if it is all worth it?
On a day after you run into a demanding renter --- a client who
really won't make you any money in the best case --- makes unreasonable
demands on your time, you can feel a little worn down. Sometimes
transactions blow-up. Sometimes a real estate agent ends up working
late into the evening for the chance to make money ... but doesn't make
anything. I remember the days when crawled out of a warm bed on a
Saturday morning, and rushed to make an early appointment and then was
stood up.
But this isn't a post about poor little me.
This is a thank you to God and to friends and family and life.
In a slowing market, I am busier than ever.
My phone rings all day long. And, I'm happy to work the long hours I
do. I don't think there is any secret to my success. I just work hard
and try to take care of people. And, the best part is that when I take
care of people, people take care of me. Sometimes we forget that simple
truth, but I was reminded of that this Sunday.
Sunday evening, I was exhausted. My wife was not feeling well. I
wanted to go home, curl up and hide from the world for a few hours.
But, a client of mine wanted me to come to her new home at the Fountains condominiums. She had asked us over to share a meal and to check out the improvements she had made to the home.
I was too tired to have fun. I didn't want to go.
I called her and told her this. She wasn't very happy. She told me
she had been hard at work cooking and that her efforts would be wasted.
I told her my wife was not feeling well. (She wasn't.) This client is
Brazilian, and she said that in Brazil she would have kept her thoughts
to herself. But here in the US, she was going to blurt out her
disappointment.
I groaned to myself. My wife
is a gourmet cook. I've seen her silently suffer after she worked hard
at preparing a meal that guests blew off. So I had no choice. Tired
or no, I had to drag myself to the Fountains to meet my client and her husband.
Guess what?
It was one of the best dinners I've ever eaten (that my wife didn't
make). It turns out my client is a wonderful cook and a generous host.
Her condo was tastefully decorated with items from Brazil, her
childhood, her familial roots in Austria and with interesting pieces
art from around the world. The meal was well-prepared with foods that
took time, love and effort to make the right way. While we enjoyed
foods from her Brazilian and European heritage, her husband put a
little Brazilian music on the stereo.
Then after dinner, her husband pulled out his guitar and played a
few classics in Brazilian and Spanish. He was amazingly talented.
While he sang, she translated. It was quite a performance. The best
part was when he played an original tune.
And to think what a fool I would have been if I hadn't gone.
I was exhausted and needed some good food. The universe had carefully pre pared
me exactly what I needed and I was about to walk away from it! This
only reinforces my belief that you should always do what is right.
If you do what is right, the universe, and God, will look out for you, providing exactly what you need exactly when you need it.

Commander James S. Ward,
well known as a scholar and an authority on tactics and gunnery, was
the first Union naval officer mortally wounded after the outbreak of
the Civil War. Ward well known because, among other accomplishments, he
was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Union commanders understood that a
Confederate blockade of the Potomac was a serious threat to the main
supply line for Washington, D.C. As a result, a flotilla of seven navy
vessels under the command of James Ward were dispatched to protect the
waterway for shipping. In the earliest days of the war, that flotilla
was involved in an action to support the strategic redeployment of a
small Federal force at Mathias Point. During this action a Confederate
sniper shot Ward and he died shortly thereafter.
One of these forts was named after Commander Ward, and today Fort
Ward is the best preserved of this fort system. During the war, Fort
Ward was the fifth largest fort defending the Capitol and thus deterred
Confederate forces who never attacked its earthen walls. The Union Army
abandoned the Fort in December 1865, and shortly thereafter, any
salvageable materials were sold at auction.
The land is now owned by the City of Alexandria. During the time of
the war, the fort was a dusty (at times muddy) place, stripped of
vegetation and armed with cannons. Today, it is a manicured oasis of
greenery in the city of Alexandria.

On the grounds of old Fort Ward, Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site
serves as a park, educational center and cultural remembrance for those
who served here. The museum has exhibits on general Civil War topics as
well as interpretive programs specific to Fort Ward and Alexandria
during the Union occupation. Fort Ward can be entered at 4301 West
Braddock in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Fort is located relatively close to Inova Alexandria Hospital and Episcopal High School. The surrounding area is a mixture of very high end housing, middle class housing and is located not far from Skyline and the condos near I-395. To search the surrounding area check out West End Alexandria.
