From February 1-6 Crystal City will celebrate its second annual Fashion Week. Events will include trunk shows, music, food and drink, and dancing. Audience members can even participate in an on-the-spot design competition.
Take some time to explore the Crystal City complex, which includes high rise residential buildings, office blocks, hotels, shops and restaurants.
Crystal City's 6,000 residents could go for months, or even years, without leaving the complex, which offers health clubs, banks, drug stores, supermarkets, doctors' and dentists' offices, a post office, nine parks, public concerts, a Water Park, night school and over l50 shops and restaurants. In case the weather is bad, all these features are connected by underground passageways.
If they do need to go somewhere, not to worry--because Crystal City is a commuter's dream. It is five minutes from downtown or Reagan National Airport, lies on two Metro lines, has its own VRE commuter train station and is a hub of the local bicycle commuter system.

The Eclipse at Center Park is a condominium community located alongside Four Mile Run in Arlington County where Crystal City meets Alexandria's Potomac Yard.
The community backs to the Yellow Line and Blue Line where the metro bridges Four Mile Run. There is no metro stop at the Eclipse, though there is talk that a stop is coming within 5 to 10 years near Potomac Yard and/or the Eclipse. Nonetheless, the Eclipse is a paragon of convenience, with regular bus shuttles circling from through Crystal City and the Eclipse.
The Eclipse has a number of great amenities worth checking out including a pool and workout area, but for now we're focusing on a collection of social amenities found on the seventh floor of the east tower. On this floor you'll find a modern and stylish party room. From the party room, one can exit to the roof deck.

The Observation Deck has a pillared structure that frames intriguing views of nearby site. From the Observation Deck, one can easily watch the planes come and go from Reagan National Airport. On most days both the Washington Monument and the US Capitol are plainly visible and much more obvious than they might seem in the picture below.
\

The social room at the Eclipse has a great billiard table and theater style seating in the media room.Click the Eclipse to see prices and listings of homes for sale at the Eclipse.

Crystal City is an urban village in Arlington County Virginia. Crystal City is home for numerous defense contractors, the United States Department of Labor, Public Broadcasting, the EPA and many satellite offices for The Pentagon. While Crystal City only has more than 6,000 residents, more than 60,000 people work a normal business schedule in Crystal City.
Crystal is not a "planned community", in the sense that developers did not design and follow a master plan. Nonetheless, Crystal City is a community with a plan. In the middle of the last century, the area now called Crystal City had few residents. The area east of Aurora Highlands had several motels which served National Airport (which later came to be known as Reagan National Airport). Many train-tracks served the busy Potomac Yard station (now a shopping center) and warehouses were located in the vicinity.
But in 1963 things began to change with the construction of several office buildings and condominiums. One of the first of these condos was Crystal House, so named for an ornate crystal chandelier in the lobby. Subsequent buildings followed with similar names such as Crystal Gateway and Crystal Park. It only made sense to call the new urban village Crystal City.
The builders at Crystal City largely followed a pattern of building that was considered avant-garde at the time. These structures feature the grand sweeping curves of textured concrete with plenty of glass. The proportions of the lobbies and common areas are large and airy and the buildings themselves seem to flow along the city streets and complement the abundant landscaping details.
Crystal City is bounded by some of the busiest commuter arteries of Northern Virginia. While the buildings here are both residential and office, the broad circulating avenues of Crystal City allow traffic to flow through Crystal City and at the same time encourage underground pedestrians to shop by foot. In Northern Virginia's 100 degree summers, the rains of spring and the icy cold of winter, this is a big benefit to residents of Crystal City.
While the underground shops and passages of Crystal City remain, today Crystal City is slowly being redeveloped into a more traditional urban feel. Restaurants and shops are starting to open at street level. Arlington County is encouraging the redevelopment by change some traffic patterns to make streets like Crystal Drive function as city streets, rather than as circulating roads.
Even with these changes, today it is still easy for residents each of Rt. 1 along the Crystal Drive corridor to walk from the north side of Crystal City almost all the way to the Eclipse at Center Park entirely underground. Crystal City together with nearby Aurora Highlands and Pentagon City is an ultra convenient place to live for folks who work in Arlington, the Pentagon or Washington DC. Contact us today to learn more about this neighborhood and its many unique advantages.

For all the virtues Northern Virginia enjoys, traffic is not one of them. Crystal City in Arlington is close to all the major employment/transportation centers. Crystal City in Arlington Virginia is adjacent to The Pentagon and right across the river from downtown Washington DC. Crystal City in Arlington County has some of the best schools in the country. Crystal City has 2 Metro subway stops, a regional VRE train station and of course Reagan National Airport. Crystal City in Arlington has been fully developed with a mix of class A office space and residential housing--side by side. Apartments, condos and single family homes are all available in Crystal City.

One such condo is Crystal Square located at 1300 Crystal Drive in Crystal City Arlington. One particular unit even has a pool side ground level patio. This unit has more than 2100 square feet of living space and a jacuzzi master bath.

Arlington County will soon break ground on a major recreation center at the north end of Crystal City making Crystal City even more desirable. Investing in property in Crystal City is a safe investment that can be enjoyed without a long commute.

Crystal Gateway condominium community is located at the north end of Crystal City in a remarkably convenient location. Crystal Gateway has easy access to Washington DC, the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport, Arlington VA and Alexandria VA via connecting thoroughfares such as I-395, Rt. 1 and Rt. 110. Crystal Gateway is networked into the passages that connect Crystal City to Crystal City Metro.
Units at Crystal Gateway are spacious with impressive balconies. The community features an indoor and outdoor pool, fitness facilities, meeting rooms, media rooms, card rooms and more. What follows is a quick and random pictorial study of Crystal Gateway. For a closer look at Crystal Gateway or for more information about pricing and availability click Crystal Gateway.

There is a balcony off nearly every room at Crystal Gateway.

Here is a look down Crystal Drive from Crystal Gateway.

The curved design of the building offers pleasant architectural vistas.

The pillars out front are designed to imply strength and give a modern spacious feel to the building.

The indoor pool is available year-round.

The original cabinetry is high-quality but many residents have replaced the countertops and appliances.

The landscaping is well-maintained with a friendly splash of color.

The lobbies offer many points to sit and have an impromptu meeting with friends and guests.

The ceilings on the first floor are very high.

This media room is one of several nicely appointed meeting rooms reserved for residents of Crystal Gateway.

This was just before Memorial Day as they made preparations for the coming pool season.

Hardwoods and a view to Crystal City. What's not to like?

Crystal City is located in Arlington County Virginia between the Potomac River and the neighborhood of Aurora Highlands.

In many ways, Crystal City is a transportation hub. Crystal City well served by mass transit with easy access to the metro at the Crystal City Metro stop and many bus stops in the area. In addition to land transportation, Crystal City is served by Reagan National Airport. Jefferson Davis Highway / Rt. 1 is a main artery here, as is I-395.

In addition to Jefferson Davis Highway, one of the main thoroughfares in Crystal City is Crystal Drive. Crystal Drive runs parallel to Rt. from north to south through Crystal City. Many of Crystal City's most desirable homes are found on Crystal Drive including Crystal Gateway and Waterford House.
The Shops of Crystal City are accessible from Crystal Drive and from many other locations in Crystal City. |

Crystal Drive is generally uncongested and offers a wide choice of restaurants and shops.

One of the nicest things about Crystal City is the abundance of greenery in this urban setting. Crystal City manages to be convenient, metro accessible, full of high-rises, shops and restaurants, but home to many trees and parks.

Crystal City is connected by a network of tunnels and shops both below grade and indoors that make Crystal City a walker's paradise.

These passages network the shops of Crystal City to Crystal Drive and the Crystal City Metro Stop and more.

Pleasant sidewalks follow alongside the broad avenues of Crystal City.

From the skyline of Crystal City to the shops in the heart of Crystal City, this is a pleasant and convenient place to work and live.

Even the shops below-grade are well-lit and feel open and friendly. Crystal City is a well-planned community.

The oldest school building in Arlington County houses the Arlington Historical Museum. The Arlington Historical Museum is owned and operated by the Arlington Historical Society, a group of concerned local citizens that conduct research and to preserve and disseminate knowledge relating to the history, archaeology, material culture, and geographical and socio-economic development of Arlington County, Virginia.
I recently stopped by the Arlington Historical Musuem and took a quick tour of the exhibits therein. The museum is located at 1805 South Arlington Ridge Road. The location is relatively close to the Pentagon City and Crystal City metrorail stations but sits up on the ridge overlooking Crystal City. The setting is very pleasant and the views here toward Crystal City are very pleasant.

The building itself was the Hume School, named for Frank Hume who gave some of the property for the school. The museum features a working classroom as it might have appeared when the building was used as a school. The building is designated a Virginia State Historical Landmark and is also on the National Register of Historic Sites.

The museum is open to the public only on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 - 4 p.m. If you enjoy local history this is a worthwhile stop. The society's phone number is 703-892-4204.

I didn't take any pictures inside the building ... for a reason. I wanted to tempt you to come in and take a look around. As I was about to leave one of the members of the historical society invited me to ring the school bell before I left! I can proudly say that I have rang the bell at the Hume School.

Across Eads St. relatively close to the Crystal City Metro is the neighborhood of Aurora Highlands.

Aurora Highlands is in Arlington County and dates back to the days when Arlington County was a sleepy rural suburb of Washington DC. One of the most interesting assets of Aurora Highlands is the row of shops and restaurants along 23rd St. in Crystal City.

On a lazy summer afternoon a sidewalk cafe in Aurora Highlands is a nice place to take a bite to eat and enjoy a cool drink.

Residents of Crystal City enjoy a
remarkably convenient lifestyle. Centered along a stretch of Jefferson
Davis Highway (U.S. 1), Crystal City consists of a dramatic streetscape
of office buildings, hotels, high-rise apartment buildings, shops and
restaurants --- all shaded by trees and linked by brick sidewalks.
But the area's real charm is hidden from view --- literally. Crystal
City is so designed that residents east of Route One can traverse the
city's entire length, north to south, through a system of
climate-controlled underground concourses. Sheltered from extremes of
heat and cold, rain and snow, residents of Crystal Gateway can walk
from home to the Crystal City Metro station in less than 10 minutes.
After work, they have a multitude of options at the Crystal City
Shopping Arcade, an underground mall adjacent to the Metro that
features excellent restaurants, art galleries, hair salons, clothing
boutiques and sporting goods stores.
The Crystal City Metro Station
is underground at 1750 South Clark St., Arlington, VA 22202. It is
served by both the Yellow and Blue lines of the Washington Metro. The
entrance is at the corner of Clark St. & 18th St. Crystal City
Station opens at 5:02 a.m. (Trains leave exactly two hours later
Saturdays and Sundays.) The last train departs around midnight. (Trains
leave exactly three hours later on Friday and Saturday nights.) There
are 10 bike racks at the Crystal City Metro Station. The station is
served by many buses and bus lines:
- Metrobus 16H
- Metrobus 23A
- Metrobus C
- Metrobus 9S
- Arlington Transit Bus 91
- Fairfax Connector Bus 597
- Loudoun OmniRide Commuter Bus
Crystal City also has its own Virginia Rail Express (VRE)
station serving both Fredericksburg and Manassas lines. Reagan National
Airport is located in Crystal City. Crystal City has direct access to
I-395 as well as Rt. 1 and the GW Parkway. The Mount Vernon bike trail
skirts the edge of Crystal City.
Crystal City is served by the Aurora Hills Branch Library.
Aurora Hills Library is in a spacious, contemporary building. The
collection is broad and diverse but highlights contemporary, popular
fiction and nonfiction titles. Periodicals and books-on-tape are also
available for borrowing. Inquire at the library to learn more abou the
book discussion groups that meet here monthly, or to learn more about
the pre-schooler program.
With Reagan National Airport
in our backyard, direct access to major highways, and even a direct
link to the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail... Crystal City is at the center of
it all.

Crystal
Gateway at 1300 Crystal Drive is one of the original anchors of Crystal
City, a so-called urban village in the southeastern corner of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of Washington, DC.
Constructed of cast concrete in the mid-Sixties, the condominium
community comprises 17 floors and a two-story penthouse. The
curvilinear Crystal Gateway adjoins Waterford House, which houses both
condos and office space and fronts 12th Street. Together, the two
buildings form a horseshoe embracing a landscaped courtyard and pool.
Crystal Gateway houses no more than four condominiums on each floor,
with some floors having only three. They range from a two-bedroom,
two-bath unit of 1,516 square feet to a three- bedroom, two-bath, one
half-bath unit of 2,296 square feet to the penthouse's four bedrooms
and three baths totaling 2,780 square feet.
Typical units boast open floor plans; wall-to-wall carpet,
ceramic-tile and hardwood floors; living-room wet bars; generous
closets; spacious kitchens with updated appliances, Corian countertops
and breakfast nooks; washer-dryers, and marble bathrooms with two
basins and a soaking tub.
Expansive balconies, opening off living rooms and master bedrooms,
afford panoramic views of the nearby Potomac River, the Capitol, the
Washington Monument, the Kennedy Center and the distant National
Cathedral.
Accessing those attractions couldn't be easier. Crystal City
is served not only by Metro's blue and yellow lines but also by
Metrobus, the Arlington Transit ART buses, and the Omnilink commuter
buses; the Metro station is also a stop for Virginia Railway Express
commuter trains.
It's just a 10-minute walk to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Pentagon Row and 15 minutes to the Pentagon and Pentagon City Mall.

Amenities at Crystal Gateway include a card room and a larger party
room off the mirrored, mauve-and-green lobby. There's an exercise
facility with a weight room and an aerobics area, as well as an indoor
pool.
Monthly condo association fees, ranging from $650 to $850, provide
for concierge and security service 24/7, water and hot water, building
maintenance and grounds keeping. One underground parking space and a
cage storage area are provided for each unit; additional paid storage
is available.
In 2007, Crystal Gateway's foyer and halls were redecorated and the
electric heating and air- conditioning system was upgraded. The last
five years have seen major building replacements, among them the
cooling tower, the heat exchanger and two hot-water heaters. In
addition, all the balconies have been resurfaced.
The building is the midst of "going green," implementing
energy-conservation measures and trash recycling, and improvements
scheduled for 2008 include new audio for the fire-alarm system and
interior decoration of both elevators.
Crystal Gateway is managed by Delbe Real Estate Company. Pets are not allowed.

I am one of the few people who are from here who are actually from
here. That is to say I was born in Fairfax and have lived much of my
life in Northern Virginia.
When I got out of the Army and moved back from Northern Virginia,
for a time I worked as a government contractor at the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, which is located at L'Enfant Plaza in
Washington DC. As you may know, parking is pricey and limited at
L'Enfant, so the Metro was my best choice for commuting.
Originally, I lived out in the exburbs and would drive the Vienna
Metro Station at the end of the Orange Line and then ride the Orange
Line to L'Enfant Plaza. It was a long and tiresome commute and I knew I
had to move in closer. So I resolved to buy a home much closer to the
Metro.
That's when reality hit my budget. Yes, I could afford housing near
the Vienna Metro, but what I could afford was not up to the standard of
what I really wanted to buy. I found the same, very high prices, all
along the Orange Line. But I also had an epiphany as I was jostling to
work today. I suddenly realized that it's not how far you ride on the Metro, it's how many stops you make. The Orange Line seemed to stop every three blocks. But the Yellow Line and the Blue Line ...
Well, both of these lines cruise quickly out of DC and then into Old Town. I found that the housing at the end of the Yellow Line
fit my budget and my expectations quite nicely. So that's where I
bought and bought and again and remain to this day. Since that time, Old Town, especially in the Carlyle District,
has grown up quite a bit, but around Huntington and the neighborhoods
of New Alexandria, one can still find neighborhoods that fit the budget
and fill the bill quite nicely. I think there are also a lot of great
neighborhoods off the Blue Line, but my personal preference is to be a
little closer to the city. |

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, formerly Washington
National Airport, is on the Potomac across the river from Washington
DC. Along with Baltimore Washington International and Dulles
International, Reagan National is one of three major airports serving
the Washington Metro area. Reagan National is easily my favorite of the
three airports for a number of reasons.
Dulles and BWI are massive sprawling airports with shuttle buses and
mobile lounges. Reagan National barely has enough room for the runway.
I always like smaller airports. They feel like they are scaled to human
beings. There is plenty of security at National, but it seems to move
along more smoothly than Dulles or BWI.
Dulles and BWI are outside the Beltway at the periphery of the
Washington Capitol Area. Reagan National is at the heart of
everything, wedged at the confluence of DC, Alexandria and Arlington.
For me, it's a long drive just to get to BWI or Dulles, but Reagan
National is here, and it's accessible by Metro. Reagan National is a
station on both the Yellow and Blue lines.
Extended parking is available at Dulles or BWI, but on the shuttle
bus, the ride from the parking lot to the terminal seems like a mile or
more. At Reagan National, extended parking is at my house. Because
instead of taking a shuttle, I can take the Metro to the airport.
The runway is a short at Reagan National and it launches planes up
over GW Parkway and at the Washington Monument, requiring a steep climb
and a hard left on take off. Some folks find this terrifying, but I
have to admit I love it. I know it's a safe path, because planes take
off here day and night, so I sit back and enjoy the abrupt take-off and
turn.

Reagan National is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, although many
ticket counters and restaurants in the airport close during off-hours.
Reagan National is located within the Commonwealth of Virginia, but it
has a Washington DC address to identify the airport's location more
easily for travelers.
The Perimeter Rule and the High Density Rule affect flights at
Reagan National. Under the Perimeter Rule, nonstop aircraft flights are
limited to a range of 1,250 miles or less. In 2000, Congress permitted
the FAA to allow six round-trip flights to points outside the
perimeter. The High Density Rule (or "Slot" rule) limits the number of
landings or takeoffs allowed in an hour. The rule affects Reagan
National because of the Airport's limited airfield capacity.
Reagan National is located in Arlington County near/in Crystal City.
It is most easily accessed from the George Washington Parkway. There
are a good many condos and homes in the Crystal City area and they're
all just a metro stop away from Reagan National. The take-off and
approach to Reagan National is down the Potomac, so that area residents
get very little noise or fly-over from the jets at Reagan National.
