The JamiesonThe Jamieson is located near the heart of Alexandria VA's Carlyle District. The United States Patent and Trademark Office is right around the corner, as is the Albert V. Bryan U.S. Courthouse. The Carlyle District is home to respected and admired developments like Carlyle Towers and the Royalton. The Jamieson fits in nicely with the brick high-rises of the Carlyle District, but the Jamieson is also uniquely different from other nearby condos and homes.

The Jamieson differs from neighboring condos because it's the only condo in the 22314 zip code that is situatued atop a hotel. That's right: the Jamieson is sited directly atop the Westin Alexandria Hotel. And this unique setting confers a number of distinct advantages.

rooftop deck at the Jamieson

Residents at the Jamieson have access to many of the services offered by The Westin Alexandria. Hotel staff can assist with everyday chores and visitors can stay in a guest suite just a few floors below the condominium residences of the Jamieson. The amenities of the building include:

  • kitchen at the JamiesonSwimming Pool
  • Rooftop Terrace (pictured above)
  • Reserved Parking
  • Valet Parking
  • Maid Service
  • Catering

The building is unique but the units themselves have the quality and details that shoppers in the Carlyle District have come to expect in most homes in this neighborhood:

  • Rich, hardwood floors in living/dining rooms
  • Elegant tile floors in bathrooms and kitchen
  • Granite countertops and vanities
  • Stainless steel appliances
  • Reserved parking

As of the time of this posting, the Duke at Old Town is under construction in Alexandria VA. These brand new condominium homes are on sale already. The Duke promises a self-contained community within walking distance of world class shopping and boutiques, distinct and popular dining, and the culture of arts and attraction.  Easily accessible, the development is a few short blocks from the King Street Metro and the Beltway, and within 10 miles of the Capitol itself.

The Historic District of Old Town Alexandria provides a picturesque setting for this one-of-a-kind suburb, where the best of 200 plus years of history is beautifully married with 21st century planning and conveniences.  The small town atmosphere that envelopes the Duke helps to detach it from the greater Metropolis of its world-famous neighbor. Like the already completed communities at Abingdon Row and Prescott, the Duke provides Old Town colonial architecture encasing a thoroughly modern life-style.

Every day new products are invented, new uses for old products are discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is a federal agency in the Department of Commerce that strives to protect the economic interests of inventors and the welfare of the public. According to the USPTO, the purpose of these patents is to "promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution)."

The USPTO is one of the very few government services that actually completely fee funded. This is as compared to the US Postal Service and Amtrak, which are both fee funded but run deficits requiring federal money.

The USPTO occupies five interconnected buildings in the Carlyle District of Alexandria, Virginia. This office employs over 7,000 full time staff to support its major functions---the examination and issuance of patents and the examination and registration of trademarks.

Every day young and old patent examiners move to our fair city seeking residence. Many prefer the new and sparkling appeal of the Carlyle District, while some enjoy the colonial feel of Old Town. While Old Town and Carlyle District are both closest, these areas are pricey. For those who want to live close to the USPTO but who are seeking bargains Huntington, New Alexandria or the West End are excellent alternatives.

ALX --- Alexandria's Union Station near the USPTO
Union Station in Alexandria VA is a historic train station located between King and Duke Streets at the foot of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial. The station is within site of the USPTO and nearby Carlyle District. The station backs up against the King St. Metro, making it an excellent transfer point for riders of the VRE (Virginia Railway Express). Both Amtrak and VRE stop at the station and DASH and Metrobus lines stop at the King St. Station.

Alexandria's Union Station shares a name with Union Station in nearby Washington DC. Locals usually refer to the station in Washington as Union Station and the station in Alexandria as Alexandria Station. Both stations were so-named because at one time they united several lines/companies. The Amtrak code is for this station is ALX.

The terminal itself was built in 1905 in the Federal Revival style. Although it has been renovated and improved the original 1905 terminal is still in use. The memorial before the terminal is dedicate to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

veranda at Carlyle Towers One of the most obvious benefits of life at Carlyle Towers is the veranda. Many units have sweeping views of the city, but some look back toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. Others peek beyond the city to the Potomac River. Perhaps my favorites are those with a view of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial.

Train station at Old Town Alexandria VA on summer evening. Alexandria's AMTRAK station and the King St. Metro both stop at the foot of the George Washington Masonic Memorial. The VRE (Virginia Railway Express) also uses this Alexandria train station. Many locals call this landmark building the Masonic Temple or the Lighthouse. The Memorial is atop Shooter's Hill which commands an excellent view of Old Town.

I like dropping by the Lighthouse at sunset for the views to Old Town Alexandria. The Carlyle District is easily seen from Shooter's Hill also.  The windows you can see at Carlyle Towers from the George Washington National Masonic Memorial all have great views toward the memorial.

Alexandria is a city rich in history and the Royalton has easy access to the touch-points of American history. The Royalton is just a few blocks from the African American Heritage Park and almost the same distance from a memorial dedicated to fallen Confederate soldiers.

How about a relaxed evening of gaming with old friends and new acquaintances? If you've never attended an event here, there are plenty of seats and tables.

Boardgames
Please bring your favorite game and be ready to teach others. Popular Eurogames such as Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne, Medici and Aquadukt are of course welcomed. Some people enjoy older classics like Settlers of Catan. Social games, traditional games and card games are also popular.

Don't worry if you've never heard of these games, you're still welcome and most of them are very easy to learn and play. We play for fun---not for blood or money.

Food
This event will occur near dinner-time so bring and appetite. Pizzeria Venti has lots of great items and offers a 10% discount to all our members. I'll probably arrive early and eat before the event. TIP: check out the ice cream at Pizzeria Venti.

Parking and Metro
Pizzeria Venti is accessible via the King St. Metro. Parking is always tough in this neighborhood, but you should be able to find something.

More than 5,000 people reside there now, and that number is expected to double by 2010. The following residences are found along the 4.5 mile east-west corridor in Eisenhower Valley: The Royalton, Meridian at Carlyle, Post Carlyle Square, Carlyle Square, Carlyle Towers, Carlyle Mill, Avalon Apartments, Townes at Cameron Parke, The Exchange, The Reserve and Summers Grove.

Within a year these will be joined by the Alexan Carlyle, a 280-unit rental apartment community on a 2.8-acre lot in the 800 block of John Carlyle Street. Developed by Trammell Crow Residential (TCR), the $94 million project is expected to deliver its first units in the third quarter of 2009.

The development will have five stories and a variety of resort-style amenities including a pool, clubhouse, exercise room, billiards room, and a business center. Designed by Cubellis DCA, the single building will incorporate three distinct architectural motifs: the Federal architecture of nearby Old Town; art deco; and the style of urban warehouse lofts.

Carlyle District entrance

The Carlyle District is a 76.5 acre development in Old Town Alexandria. The district includes a complex of offices, hotels and retail space anchored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as condo communities such as Carlyle Towers.

Living and Working in the Carlyle District

The Carlyle District is named for John Carlyle, a Scottish merchant who was a founding trustee and the first overseer of Alexandria, Virginia. Ultimately, it will comprise more than 7 million square feet of office, hotel, residential, and retail space. The 76.5-acre tract is designed to be a vibrant, walkable area with an atmosphere that reflects adjacent Old Town but with a modern urban flair. It is designated a Coordinated Design/Development District (CDD), meaning design and development standards are already in place for an allocated 7 million square feet of office, hotel, residential, and retail space, allowing for faster approval of final plans.

USPTO Museum

Founded in 1995, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Museum serves the public need to understand the importance intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. As you might imagine, intellectual property effects nearly every aspect of our daily life. The museum also underscores some of the innovations that have aided mankind by improving medicine, motor vehicles, and modern technology. The museum encourages and promotes future inventors to strive for excellence in invention.

If you're looking for the latest and greatest inventions get to the museum before Labor Day. Until then, twenty-five of the best inventions of 2007 can be viewed at the Modern Marvels Exhibit.

Art of Invention - Invention of Art Exhibit includes 70 works that serve a practical purpose. The first section is dedicated to inventors who pursued (or were inspired by) beauty. The section section of this exhibit features inventions that were a major factor and importance in science and industry. A few of these inventions are a part of both groups. For example the Hubble Space Telescope is an important scientific machine of discovery, but it also takes beautiful pictures of space. The museum also showcases inventions from throughout history chronicling some of the important steps we have taken in innovation.

The museum would not be complete without its own invention.  The USPTO Museum features a new system of video LED strip monitors. These can be arranged at will by changing display captions. In 2005 this innovative way to display content in a museum was issued its own patent.

The USPTO museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm; on Saturday from noon to 5 pm. The USPTO museum is closed on Sundays and federal holidays.

For metro riders, the USPTO is best accessed by the King St. Metro on the Yellow Line. The museum is located at the atrium of the Madison Building of the US Patent & Trademark Office at 600 Dulany Street which is on the periphery of Old Town, near the King St. Metro, in the Carlyle District. The Carlyle District is home to many upscale condos which have views of the USPTO, the Alexandria Lighthouse and more. For information about these condos in Alexandria please contact Will Nesbitt of Condo 1 Alexandria.

The War of 1812 Re-enactment will take place at the Carlyle House Historic Park on 121 N. Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday August 23rd, 10am-4pm.

On 1814, Alexandria surrendered to the British Royal Navy, commanded by James Gordon, and forced into paying a ransom of flour, cotton, tobacco, rum, and sugar. The capture of the city allowed the British to burn public buildings and lead to the fleeing of the government and President James Madison.

The Carlyle House, a fixture in Old Town, is a wonderful venue for such an event with over 250 years of history. Many Alexandria newcomers are unaware that the Carlyle District, home to the condos of Carlyle Towers at King St. Metro are named after this estate.
