The Many Faces of The Lyceum
The Lyceum in Alexandria has had many faces through the years. Built in 1839, The Lyceum was founded by several men who merged with the Alexandria Library Company. First, the historical site was a cultural center. Then, when the Civil War came to the area The Lyceum was used as a hospital for Union Soldiers. After the war ended the site became a private home, office space and a Bicentennial Center through the years. Now, it is a museum also used for different events in the area.

No. Virginia and Tourism – Perfect Together?
When was the last time you were a tourist in your own backyard?
Most residents of Fairfax County and the northern Virginia area think they live in the shadow of Washington DC tourism. Who can compete with attractions such as the White House, the Capitol, the historical monuments and the Smithsonian museums?
But a closer look at Northern Virginia makes one realize how much there is to see before trekking into DC.
Start with a trip to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens in Mount Vernon, VA. Open year round (including Christmas), Mount Vernon includes a restaurant, food court and shop, all recently renovated,
Fairfax County is home to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, the nation’s only national park dedicated to the performing arts. Wolf Trap, with indoor and outdoor concert venues, is in Vienna, just off the Dulles Toll Road about halfway between downtown Washington and Dulles Airport.
When the Smithsonian ran out of room at its DC based National Air and Space Museum, it built a beautiful extension in Chantilly, VA. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and the Space Shuttle Enterprise among others. There is also an Airbus IMAC Theater.
Nature lovers can visit Great Falls National Park for its hiking trails and beautiful views. Like Wolf Trap, it, too, is run by the National Park Service.
History, adventure, the theater and a hike? Sounds like a great vacation is just around the corner.
Lloyd House in Old Town Alexandria
The Lloyd house is a historic building in Alexandria, VA. It was built in the late 18th century Georgian architectural style by a prominent entrepreneur named John Wise in 1796-1797. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 12, 1976. It was a very popular house for people with high statuses. George Washington once visited it, and later it was sold to Jacob Hoffman who eventually became Mayor of Alexandria. Over the next decade it was sold a couple times, the last buyer was John Lloyd whose wife was the cousin of Robert E. Lee. The Lloyd family owned the house for the next 100 years until it fell into ruin in the 1940′s and 1950′s. It was later bought buy a businessman from Wyoming who financed the renovation for it. Then in 1968, after it was fully restored it was sold to the government of Alexandria.
The Lloyd house is currently the Administrative Headquarters for the office of Historic Alexandria. Which is a department of the city of alexandria, dedicated to the preservation and collection of historic sites. Many events take place at the Lloyd House, including weddings, rehearsal dinners, fund-raisers, and workshops.

Exciting Events at Tyson’s Galleria
Tyson’s Galleria located in McLean Virginia offers a great array of shops for many guests and shoppers. What many neglect to realize is that the Galleria is also a venue for many fashion events. Every Anime Lover’s Fantasy: Otakon Convention for the Otaku Generation
Otakon is an annual Anime convention hosted in Baltimore, Maryland. Only about an hour for Northern Virginia, it is a great event for those seeking fun during the summer. This Asian pop culture convention is on July 29- 31 every year at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Homages include those to Astroboy, Yu-gi-oh, Spirited Away, Pokemon, and the Nintendo crew.
Otakon is known as the “Convention of Otaku Generation” and is one of the most lucrative events that draw in tourist all across the nation. Northern Virginians enjoy local access to the convention. One of the main spectacles of the convention are the attendants themselves; guests usually ornament themselves with intricate costumes from their favorite mangas, shows, and fan series.
Activities at the convention include a fashion show, game show, manga library, masquerade, modeling contest, panels, workshops, and video game exclusives. Otakon usually offers one entire room for pre-released video games and competitions. Workshops are great for those looking to pursue careers in drawing anime or voicing anime characters. Some idiosyncratic events at the convention include a karoake contest open to the public and an unofficial costume contest.

D.C.’s Classic Music Venue: The 9:30 Club
Located on 815 V Street NW Washington DC, the 9:30 Club is a popular venue for musicians, comedians, bands, and performers of all kinds to show off their talent.
Local and famous bands alike call the 9:30 club their home; whether it is the Northern Virginia Battle of the Bands or major bands such as Hawthorne Heights, the stage is shared with reverence for DC. For show-goers, the venue is a standing room floor with a top tier balcony.
The club also has good security measures meaning that your belongings will be searched and IDs will be necessary for those purchasing alcohol. There is a seasonal coat check for $2 an item but during the warmer seasons, there will not be a place to store items. Smoking is not allowed inside (DC has mandated an indoor smoking ban) but smokers will usually be allowed reentry.
The 9:30 Club can be accessed through the Green Line U St/ African American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Station Metro stop. Parking is $12 pre-order and is $15 the night of the event.
Fairfax Children Entertainment Options
When you have children, it can be difficult to find things to entertain them outside of doing the same old thing such as going to the park. One of the most convenient opportunities about living in Fairfax is easy access to George Mason University. The town has made an easy transition in appealing to professionals, college students, and young families. If you are looking for an extra dose of entertainment to add to your repertoire, then you should try looking up children’s performances that are often hosted at the campus.
Last year my family and I had the opportunity to attend Sesame Street Live and my children had a blast. It was so neat to have the ability to see the type of shows that are typically only shown in larger venues. Of course, with D.C. only minutes away, you still have access to all sorts of activities. The beauty of this option is that it has the possibility of being right in your back yard and you don’t have to worry about so much traffic.
They have several family entertainment options that cater specifically to children and they continue to add more options every year. Outside of going to special events hosted at the university, there are also plenty of other places that include the waterpark, petting zoo, and small fairs. Feel free to try something different when trying to plan a weekend for your children. Fairfax is a great place to start.

Summer season at Wolf Trap a fun, eclectic lineup
If you like Broadway shows, but can’t afford the tickets; want a night at the symphony but can’t seem to make the time; or are ready to revisit those rock and roll songs from your youth, make a date with Wolf Trap this summer.
Located between the Dulles Toll Road and Leesburg Pike/Rte. 7 in Vienna, less than 4 miles from Tysons Corner Center, Wolf Trap’s Filene Center will host more than 90 performances this summer.
The concert season kicks off on Memorial Day weekend with an eclectic mix of comedy, concerts and symphonies.
Where else can you see The Monkees (yes, those Monkees) on a Sunday night and enjoy the Morman Tabernacle Choir the following Wednesday?
The amphitheater, nestled in the National Park for the Performing Arts, seats 7,028 including more than 3,000 lawn seats.
This year’s lineup includes perennial favorites Garrison Keillor (of Prairie Home Companion fame), Bill Cosby, The Beach Boys and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Broadway visits Wolf Trap with performances of “Sweeney Todd,” “Mamma Mia” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”
Take a step back in time with concerts by The Go-Go’s, Peter Frampton, The Temptations, The Four Tops and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
Symphony lovers will enjoy performances by the National Symphony Orchestra with “Tcheers to Tchaikovsky,” and “Three Broadway Divas.”
Tickets are on sale now for many shows. For a full list of the summer concert series and ticket availability, see wolftrap.org.
Make plans for a great night (or two) under the stars where, as Wolf Trap says, “the arts come out to play.”

The Workhouse Arts Center is a project of the Lorton Arts Foundation. The expansive complex, once a correctional facility and now a center for arts, culture, and history, has a rich past and an exciting new presence.
History
At the beginning of the 20th Century, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned the purchase of a large tract of land in Virginia for the creation of a workhouse for Washington, DC’s non-violent criminals. In 1912 the prisoners created a brick plant where they produced bricks to construct the permanent buildings that now make up the Workhouse Arts Center. At the same time, the Women’s Division of the Workhouse was established west of the Men’s Workhouse. The Women’s Division is known for having held approximately 168 women, most from the National Women’s Party, for picketing in front of the White House for women’s voting rights. Lucy Burns, who, along with Alice Paul, founded the National Women’s Party, was one of the women incarcerated in the Women’s Division of the Workhouse.
In July 2002, Fairfax County received the title to the land that included the former Workhouse. The transfer of the land to the county was made possible through the Lorton Technical Corrections Act.. The Lorton Arts Foundation put forward a plan to transform the former prison facility into a cultural arts center and, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the rezoning of a 55-acre portion of the former correction’s facility to become the Workhouse Arts Center.

In addition, educational partnerships with local schools may provide alternative opportunities for the Ensemble to perform to audiences of their peers, and to share their experiences with other students that may be interested in the performing arts.

Style And Identity: Black Alexandria In The 1970s
The Alexandria Black History Museum at 902 Wythe Street in Alexandria, VA 22314, is currently holding an exhibition through the week from 10am to 4pm, till May 7, 2011. Admission is $2.00.
The exhibition entitled ‘Style and Identity: Black Alexandria in the 1970s ‘, showcases 32 portraits by Horace Day that depict Alexandria street scenes and African American Alexandrians such as Ricky McNeil, J.C Chase and Walter Hollis, aside from other Virginia community residents.
Horace Day had painted his work of art during the era when “Black” was becoming “Beautiful” despite the media’s constant promoting of demeaning images of African Americans.
These portraits highlight the dignity and unique beauty Horace Day saw and are now examples of the evolution of race, class, status and beauty.
