A Pedestrian’s Perspective: From the Parkway to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge
Looking for a peaceful place to travel to get out of the house? All along the George Washington Parkway stretches a path that goes all the way to Washington DC. This distance is frequented by people going at their own pace – from the high speed bicyclist commuter to the power walking local. On the way there are places to picnic / barbeque, waters to fish, and open fields for recreation.
An often overlooked detour is available just before Old Town Alexandria. By taking a pedestrian path onto the Woodrow Wilson Bridge there is a path that hugs the road until arriving at the National Harbor. It starts with a view of a graveyard. Then the panorama delivers a waterfront city skyline juxtapositioned with vehicles driving across the bridge.
Finally after passing the bridge there is a place to sit and enjoy the view, or continue to the National Harbor. Round trip its worth the effort.

Eating to go food from Abi’s II
Abi’s II is a family owned restaurant located at 5838 N Kings Hwy. They are inside of the Huntington Station shopping center, next to Huntington Metro.
Abi’s is open Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 10pm, Friday 11:00 am to midnight, Saturday 10:00 am to midnight and Sunday 10am to 10pm. Abi’s II is casual dining establishment that offers a warm atmosphere and a quick to go service.
The menu sports a variety of classic Mexican and Salvadorean dishes. The alcohol served includes domestic and import beers, margaritas and wine. My favorite entree is the homemade pork and cheese pupusas with a side of cabbage and salsa. The mellow pupusa is contrasted in flavor by the crunchy cabbage drenched in hot salsa. This is a filling meal at a good price.

Located 6488 Landsdowne Center in Alexandria VA, the Kingstowne Center for Active Adults is one of the 16 programs managed by the Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation for the Fairfax County senior community members of ages 55 years and older. Another Old Town highlight is Grape and Bean or Grape + Bean. Opened in 2008, Grape and Bean is owned by Alexandria residents, David Gwathmey and Sheera Rosenfeld. Their aim is to provide a comfortable, relaxing and welcoming place where people could receive excellent service and quality products.
Grape + Bean = Cozy and Charming
Grape and Bean is a coffee shop, retail wine shop and wine tasting bar that also offers a food menu with cheese plates and sharing platters alongside selling wine by the glass and coffee by the cup. They also retail wine by the bottle and coffee by the pound. Grape and Bean is a recommended place for gift baskets and will offer their suggestions while customers make their selections.
New Creative Sweets at Sugar Cube of Old Town
Located 2 blocks from King Street on Lee Street, the Sugar Cube can be found near the Torpedo Factory. The Sugar Cube is an upscale confectionary and treats shop offering traditional candies, new creations inspired from the classics and candies inspired by different countries that are so creative and mouth watering.
The sweets and candies found at Sugar Cube are a variety such as sea salt blended into Scotch bars to Haribo gummy bears. Yet all have superior qualities. Kim and Alyssa Theodore own Sugar Cube and are one of the many entrepreneurs at Old Town that cater with passionate quality and service. They also assure that all varieties have been tasted and approved by them prior to selling them at the shop.
Sugar Cube is just one of the many highlights of Old Town that makes it special.
