Homes for sale near the Franconia / Springfield Metro Station in Fairfax County Virginia

metro rail

Metro rail at Franconia Springfield.

The Franconia Springfield Metro Station is the last stop on the Blue Line of the Washington Metro. This station is about a mile from the Mixing Bowl–the intersection of I-95, I-395 and the Capital Beltway (I-495).  Homes in this part of the county, just outside the Beltway, have a very suburban feel with green grass and meandering streets.  Although this area provides easy access to Tyson’s Corner and to Fort Belvoir by car, many residents here use the metro station at Franconia/Springfield. There are few homes within walking distance to this station, but this station is well served by a large parking garage.

King Street Metro Changes

“Kiss and Ride, but don’t park,” said Michael Pope. “That’s the idea behind Alexandria’s new 7 million plan to redesign the King Street Metro Station. The purpose of this is to increase pedestrian safety.

At the ground level this means:

1. less parking availability (minus 30 parking spaces)

2. new landscaping / reshaping the suburban parking

3. increased bicycle parking

4. increased bus wait times.

City transportation director Rich Baier said that a balance has been maintained, however this plan could tip that balance to favor the pedestrians, transits, and cyclists. In comparison to neighboring stations like Springfield or Van Dorn, Old Town is more urban and supposedly should have a more urban transportation hub.

Planning director Farrol Hamer told City Council members that the changes are intended to make Old Town less reliant on single-occupancy vehicles.

“City leaders say a recent fatality at the Metro station created a need for increased pedestrian safety” said Michael Pope. “They were also looking at a number of other potential improvements, but abandoned the ideas to expedite the project” said Pope. Items on the chopping block include dynamic message boards at bus shelters and brick sidewalks.
