The History of Woodlawn

A National Trust Historic Site and National Historic Landmark

Woodlawn's reminder of its beautiful history

Woodlawn's reminder of its beautiful history

Woodlawn was originally a part of the Mount Vernon estate established in 1800 to 1805 for George Washington’s nephew Major Lawrence Lewis and Eleanor ‘Nelly’ Custis Lewis, his wife and Martha Washington’s granddaughter who were married on February 22, 1799 at Mount Vernon.

The Federal style mansion was designed by Dr. William Thornton, the first architect of the U.S Capitol, with elaborate details that it was most admired.

Woodlawn was later on sold by the Lewis’s son in 1846 to the Troths and the Gillinghams from New Jersey and Pennsylvania who had Woodlawn established as a ‘free labor colony’ promoting equality and liberty regardless of race and color. With the controversial social status of Woodlawn, the Confederates had made Woodlawn an area of raids and utmost suspicion during the Civil War.

Woodlawn had been severely damaged and uncared for years after, but with playwright Paul Kester and coal heiress Elizabeth Sharpe residing at Woodlawn in the 20th century and had managed to restore its living condition into an early American Estate, Woodlawn saw its last private owners, Senator Oscar Underwood of Alabama and his wife.

After Mrs. Underwood’s death, Woodlawn was preserved by a private organization upon purchase and later on was the first historic site to be owned and operated by The National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1951.

George Washington’s Gristmill and Distillery: Innovative Entrepreneurship

George Washington’s Gristmill and Distillery

George Washington’s Gristmill and Distillery

With his vision of transforming his inherited plantation into a model of creative entrepreneurship and the nation’s being self sufficient, George Washington constructed a stone merchant gristmill in 1771 for a mill built by his father. The mill powered by a large water wheel, had increased the production of cornmeal and flour that was exported to England, West Indies and Europe. The waterwheel was powered by water that was diverted into Dogue Run Creek from Piney Branch.

Upon the full functionality of the gristmill, Washington had constructed a whisky distillery by the mill in 1797 where an array of whisky, brandy and vinegar was produced. This distillery was about 2,250 square feet making it the largestwhiskey distillery in the 18th century.

The main cash crop tobacco was changed to wheat by Washington in the 1760’s noting that the wheat could be planted twice a year and did not decrease the soil’s nutrients as fast as tobacco could. This change would supply people and livestock of Mount Vernon when wheat prices were low.

With the 45 years George Washington had worked endlessly to improve his plantation, he was able to expand his property and developed a 7 year crop rotation plan, soil amendments and fertilizers and reduction of erosion in plowing through experimentation.

George Washington proved not only to be a successful entrepreneur, farmer and architect, his desire to improve agriculture and Mount Vernon’s productivity increased into providing America an economic success with the nation’s capabilities to produce agricultural produce that would be sold worldwide.

Featured Neighborhoods in Southern Fairfax County

I make no secret of my love of Southern Fairfax County. It’s definitely one of my favorite areas of Northern VA. From upscale and luxurious homes to budget-saving cheapos, you can find it here in a community that is close to town, easy on traffic and loaded with activities and amenities.

To make things a little more confusing, Fairfax County surrounds the City of Fairfax. Locals generally refer to the county as “Fairfax County” and the city as “Fairfax”, but Alexandria uses the opposite nomenclature. “Alexandria” generally refers to greater/postal Alexandria, while “City of Alexandria” refers to the jurisdiction of the City of Alexandria. So if you’re a newcomer here it can be a little tricky to find the right home at the right price in the South County area. Contact us if you’re looking for a local expert and we’ll put you on the path to finding the home that you really want. Some highlights of the Mount Vernon / Alexandria area include:
