No. Virginia and Tourism – Perfect Together?
When was the last time you were a tourist in your own backyard?
Most residents of Fairfax County and the northern Virginia area think they live in the shadow of Washington DC tourism. Who can compete with attractions such as the White House, the Capitol, the historical monuments and the Smithsonian museums?
But a closer look at Northern Virginia makes one realize how much there is to see before trekking into DC.
Start with a trip to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens in Mount Vernon, VA. Open year round (including Christmas), Mount Vernon includes a restaurant, food court and shop, all recently renovated,
Fairfax County is home to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, the nation’s only national park dedicated to the performing arts. Wolf Trap, with indoor and outdoor concert venues, is in Vienna, just off the Dulles Toll Road about halfway between downtown Washington and Dulles Airport.
When the Smithsonian ran out of room at its DC based National Air and Space Museum, it built a beautiful extension in Chantilly, VA. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center displays the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay and the Space Shuttle Enterprise among others. There is also an Airbus IMAC Theater.
Nature lovers can visit Great Falls National Park for its hiking trails and beautiful views. Like Wolf Trap, it, too, is run by the National Park Service.
History, adventure, the theater and a hike? Sounds like a great vacation is just around the corner.

Great Falls National Park
Julie and I stopped by Great Falls National Park to do a little hiking. The weather was perfect, not to hot—not to cold. When I reached the Potomac I snapped a few pictures.
At Great Falls, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. The Patowmack Canal offers a glimpse into the early history of this country. Great Falls Park has many opportunities to explore history and nature, all in a beautiful 800-acre park only 15 miles from the Nation’s Capital.

Analemma Society Hosts Renowned Lecturer on Astronomy and Math
If you love gazing at the stars and other celestial bodies, and wonder about the relationship between space, time and mathematics, consider attending an intriguing lecture sponsored by the Analemma Society, an organization which fosters awareness and greater understanding of astronomy. This lecture focuses on the use of sundials, a feature in the Sundial Garden in Observatory Park at Turner Farm operated by the Society in cooperation with the Fairfax County Park Authority. Professor Len Berggren will be the guest speaker at the Great Falls Library on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture, entitled, Astronomy, Mathematics and Timekeeping in Medieval Islam looks deep into ancient times for answers still relevant today. In the middle ages Islamic civilization had the most advanced science in the world. Its scholars and scientists had mastered ancient mathematics and astronomy. They had invented the arithmetic we use today, as well as algebra and trigonometry. In addition, they had founded the first astronomical observatories. This lecture discusses these achievements and how they led to new astronomical theories, presaging those of Copernicus, and a new science of celestial timekeeping, including sundials.
Professor C. Lennart Berggren is presently Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University and renowned for his research on reading and translating Greek and medieval Arabic texts dealing with the mathematical sciences which includes astronomical instruments, cartography and astronomy. He is an expert on the mathematical ideas in these texts, their historical development and social context. He has been published in more than 60 publications.
The Analemma Society operates Observatory Park at Turner Farm in cooperation with the Fairfax County Park Authority. In 2007, the first sundial was installed in the Sundial Garden at Observatory Park. That sundial commemorates the founding of Jamestown. The second sundial will be a model of a 14th century sundial, the oldest extant sundial with a gnomon directed towards the celestial North Pole, designed by Ibn al Shatir, predecessor to Copernicus. It was created for the Umayyad Mosque, the Grand Mosque of Damascus, in Syria.
For more information about this lecture please call 703-757-8560. Great Falls Library is located at 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls.
