Fairfax Country and is currently the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia with over 32,500 matriculated students. Its main campus is in Fairfax and is 15 miles away from D.C. making it extremely accessible especially though the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro Station Orange Line.
Mason’s programs are growing exponentially in law, economics, writing, and computer sciences. It has both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in several specialized fields. Mason’s School on Public Policy is ranked #1 in the nation and includes federally funded public policy, public affairs, public administration, and political science research. It is ranked 72 on the 2011 list of Top Public National Universities and was ranked #1 on the 2008 list of “Up and Coming National Universities.”
Mason also opens its doors to the public; the Patriot Center and the Johnson Center are frequently used for community events and shows. The Center for the Arts is commonly used for operas, orchestras, ballets, and musical/theatrical performances. The arena serves as a 2,000 seat concert hall for many local events. The Patriot Center is used more frequently and for larger events; it has over 10,000 seats and hosts over 100 concerts annually. Famous celebrity performances include Bob Dylan and the Ringling Brothers Circus. The campus also includes a 68,000 square foot Aquatic and Fitness Center that features an Olympic sized swimming pool.
