About Fairlington
An unincorporated neighborhood in south of Arlington County, Fairlington was built in the 1940’s financed by the Defense Homes Corporation during World War II as a large brick-townhousing project, named after Fairfax and Arlington where it is located. Because of this Fairlington has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register in 1999.
Fairlington was owned by a friend of President George Washington, John Carlyle in 1756 and then occupied by the military in 1861 to 1870 before being owned by Hartford Insurance in the 1960’s till 1972 when the apartments were developed. Fairlington now highlights the brick colonial styles of the past carefully designed by architects Kenneth Franzheim and Alan B. Mills that had enhanced the features of Fairlington.
While the history of Fairlington brings the neighborhood together, the Fairlington Community Center provides every resident the opportunity to be acquainted with recreational activities for both adults and children. The Fairlington Community Center features 6 multipurpose rooms, art studios, fitness room, playgrounds, lockers, outdoor basketball courts, fitness trail, picnic area, public restrooms, rectangular field, water fountain and vending machines with an array of programs to participate in.
Fairlington lies nearby Shirlington and Parkfairfax with accessibility to D.C and many areas of Northern VA via I-395 and King Street.
