Ballston — more than just a Metro stop
Ballston, a city named after the Ball Family-who were related to George Washington, is a thriving city with personality nestled in Arlington County, Virginia. One of the oldest crossroads in Northern Virginia lies in Ballston. The crossroads began as Birch’s Crossroads and became Ball’s Crossroads. Now this area is the intersection of North Glebe Road and Wilson Blvd. This area has been a focal point in Ballston since 1740. In 1896, attention to this area was taken away with the coming of the Electric Trolley Line. In 1951 the attention was brought back when the Parkington Shopping Center opened at the Old Ball’s Crossroads intersection.
There are several United States government agencies that are headquartered in Ballston. Some of these include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Naval Research, and the National Science Foundation.
Today the Ballston Common Mall is a major attraction in the area. Formerly known as Parkington Shopping Center the mall opened October 20, 1986 with 530,000 square feet of shopping.
Ballston is an ideal place to live or visit with something to offer every member of the family.
