What’s So Special About Crystal City?
Looking at Crystal City now, who would’ve thought that it was once an area overrun by junkyards and low rent motels?
The year 1963 marked a change in this community after the establishment of the first few condos and office buildings in the area during that period. The first building was called the Crystal House and had a magnificent crystal chandelier displayed in its lobby; thus, this is where the name of the community – Crystal City – was derived from after the succeeding buildings incorporated the word crystal into their names.
Today, this community is labeled as one of the many “urban villages” in Arlington County, Virginia.
Crystal City, as a neighborhood, creates a sense of uniformity in that the structures in it follow very similar styles and materials (a lot of the buildings having a granite exterior). The landscaping is also quite similar in terms of layout and design.
What makes Crystal City so unique, however, is what’s happening beneath it. The city shows a large network of underground shopping areas and corridors that connect structures all throughout the city. In fact, it is entirely possible for the citizens living east of Route 1 to go from the north side to the south side of the community, while performing errands and grabbing a bite along the way – all the while doing this underground. This has been quite an advantage during bad weather.
Later developments in Crystal City over the past five years have geared the once considered avant-garde village toward a more urban and traditional feel. Thus, it can be expected that this community still has much to offer in terms of creating a unique and convenient atmosphere suitable for those who are looking for something quite a bit out of the ordinary.
That’s what makes Crystal City so special.

Where is Arlington VA?
Across the Potomac River from Washington DC lies the urban county of Arlington. Arlington, which is about the 26 square miles, has started to become a residential and commercial hub due to its accessibility and reliable work force.
Rosslyn and Crystal City are two of my favorite “urban” villages in Arlington.
