About the Metro
In 1967, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority or Metro was established in order for the national capital area to have an organized regional transportation system. In 1969, Metro started to construct its rail system. In the year of 1973, four regional buses have been added to the system.
Three years later, Metrorail was introduced. Metrorail currently operates in 86 stations boasting 106 track miles while Metrobus operates 24/7 with 1,500 buses servicing around the nation’s capital. Over 3.4 millions commuters within the 1,500-square mile range are presently being served by Metrorail and Metrobus. On the other hand, MetroAccess, a paratransit service by Metro launched in 1994, approximately creates 1.5 million trips annually.
