Tips for Metro Commuters

train arriving

Platform of the Vienna Metro Station

For your Metro ride to become pleasurable, avoid the busiest times. As much as possible, take the train during off-peak hours. Doing so will save you time, money and most of all patience.  Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are the most jam-packed days while the most congested periods start from 7:45 to 8:45 in the morning and 4:45 to 5:45 in the afternoon. You can save time if you have a round-trip farecard, a valid pass or SmarTrip card at hand. Check how many cars are in the arriving train through electronic message signs. Though it is almost always crowded in the 1st two cars, don’t assume that elsewhere is as congested. Look out for cars not full of passengers and board on those. Abiding on Employer-sponsored telecommuting and flextime can save you from all the discomforts you may experience during rush hour. In that way, you are also helping in the reduction of air pollution and minimizing of the crowd. You might as well suggest it to employers who don’t administer such measures.

Tips for Yellow Line Commuters

Fort Totten and Jerry ReedIn the morning, metro congestion starts to build up at 7:15 am from Crystal City station going to Pentagon station. The rush typically lasts until 9 am so as much as possible don’t take the trains during these times.

If you will be coming from Gallery Pl-Chinatown station to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station, don’t add up to the crowd by not riding after 4:45 pm to 6:30 pm.

Tips for Blue Line Commuters

Franconia Springfield Metro

Last stop on the Blue Line

If you want a stress-free outbound journey to Rosslyn station from Metro Center station, catch the train before 5 pm as rush hour starts after 5pm and ends at around 6:30 pm. Blue Line shares track with Orange Line during the heaviest times.

When the crowd hits you by surprise, it is best if you wait for the second train. Most likely, there aren’t as many passengers on the next train.
