Indian Food at the Microcon

Years ago I wrote a game called Battlestorm, and as part of the promotion tour, I travelled to game conventions all over the US. The largest and best of these game conventions like GenCon and Origins Game Fair would have 30,000 to 50,000 attendees who come to play games, attend lectures, see old friends and make new friends. It was my first exposure the convention circuit, and it made quite an impression on me.

Gen Con 1999

At these game conventions I met many celebrities, mostly actors from science fiction shows and movies, and some authors. In addition I met many gamers from around the country. I didn’t often get the chance to play games at these conventions because I was too busy selling my own game, but I did get the opportunity to tour the displays and meet others before the gates opened to the general public.

Today, I don’t attend game conventions in a professional capacity, but I still attend one or two conventions a year. My wife Julie and I enjoy the drive up to the Lancaster Resort and Convention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Smaller conventions like Historicon and Cold Wars up in Lancaster have perhaps 5,000 attendees; however, these smaller conventions are closer and still offer a lot of fun. Most conventions last 3 to 4 days. When I was a presenter I would stay for the entire convention, but as an attendee I rarely stay more than 1 day.

Microcon

Reflecting the fun I’d seen at these conventions, I hatched the idea of bringing a smaller version to Alexandria. Using our group Alexandria Fun with Friends we host a mini-convention on a nearly monthly basis. The Microcon is much smaller in every respect. We usually have 30 to 70 attendees. Instead of taking up space in a convention hall, we usually occupy the Club Room of a local condominium.

Attendees come to learn, teach and share games. Together, we play social games, board games, card games and role-playing games to get to know each other and to have fun. The fun starts at 2 in the afternoon and at dinner time we take a break to eat a meal. At a big convention, vendors are ever-present selling everything from carnie-food to gourmet meals, but our Microcon doesn’t have any food vendors.

Microcon

Many times, Julie has made food like chili or enchiladas or lasagna. Sometimes we have had the food catered. Most recently, the food at the Microcon was provided by Dishes of India, an Indian restaurant located in the Belle View Shopping Center.

Indian food from Dishes of India

If you’ve never had Indian food, or if you love Indian food, I highly recommend Dishes of India. The lunch buffet is the best way to take a tour of what the restaurant has to offer. The food is generally mild and very “American-friendly”, meaning there are options on the buffet which will please the pickiest palate.

For example, you might not like Indian food, but I know you like fire-roasted chicken. Vegetarians will enjoy simple foods like potatoes or green beans will Indian spices.

If you need an event catered, contact Gopal at Dishes of India. I found him to be friendly helpful and accommodating. He tailored a menu to fit our budget and our needs and there was ample food for our attendees.

Help me find a condo for rent!

Here’s an email that I recently received and my response. I’ve changed the names (for privacy’s sake), but am posting for the benefit of those who might be seeking a rental agent.

Hello Will,
We are actually interested in working with an agent, as opposed to trying to do the leg work ourselves. My husband is currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan. We are awaiting orders that originally had us relocating this summer. Now it looks more like late October/November, following the new fiscal year.
As mentioned, we will be stateside and staying in DC on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 22/23rd and would like to commit to meeting with an agent who handles rentals. Realizing that one may not know what units will become available in November, it would still provide a head start in preparing for our relocation. We are not familiar with the neighborhoods other than online research and bits of information provided by friends. My husband does wish to be (at least) within walking distance of the metro. We are interested in checking out Old Town Alexandria and other suggested areas.
Thank you for your time.
Regards,

Sally

Dear Sally,

I’m happy to provide consultations and advice at no charge. As a rental
agent I am the most helpful to renters who know what they want but don’t want to spend time and energy chasing dead-ends or stuck in traffic. If you know where you will be working, how many bedrooms you need, what
amenities you enjoy, my expertise allows me to very quickly identify a short list of properties that will be of interest to you. I am constantly touring homes,
properties and neighborhoods. I know the area’s traffic patterns. I know Northern Virginia.

You’re probably not asking me to do this—but in case you are—I must
make clear that I am not available to spend time and resources trying to give you my expertise. It would be impossible for me to do this in a weekend anyway.  Lastly, from a business standpoint, it is not an effective use of my skills or your time to expend resources and time driving around to neighborhoods and going to condo communities in June on the hope that you will will rent something in November.

Again, I’m available to chat and offer free advice and provide direction if you would like to follow up with your own footwork. Thanks much for the opportunity. It is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Will Nesbitt

The importance of marketing …

Marketing is how you communicate to customers and potential customers what you’re all about. How important is marketing?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfwQKapDMws&feature=player_embedded
Terminator

If you’ve seen the Terminator then it should be apparent just how important marketing is. A good marketer never lies. A marketer selects the facts that are relevant and uses them to put his product in the best light.

shining

One of the reasons a good realtor is an important asset when you’re seeking a new home is because a knowledgeable realtor might have an understanding or information that might not be readily apparent to you. As in the Mary Poppins example, home buyers sometimes don’t have a full picture of an area or a neighborhood and they are scared by aspects of a neighborhood that they should embrace rather than fear.

The truth is a skilled marketer can arrange facts to give a powerful impression that isn’t really reflective of reality. But a good marketer only uses his powers for good and not for evil.

Mary Poppins

That is to say that a marketer should always consider the public’s best interests when marketing a property. The trouble is not all marketers are good and many marketers are unskilled. That’s why a realtor is so important when you’re searching for a new home. As a trusted expert, the realtor knows where reality lies and can help you sort out marketing enticements from marketing facts.
